About this Cook
I'm a mother of five and grandmother of two. I enjoy trying new recipes out on my family and having big family dinners.
My favorite things to cook
I love to bake breads and pies, and my favorite recipe is one for dinner rolls that came from the kids' great-great grandmother. I also enjoy making Italian dishes such as lasagna.
My favorite family cooking traditions
It has to be cookies with the kids, and baking pies using my mother's pie crust recipe.
My cooking triumphs
Watching my 14 year old daughter make pie crust on her own, and seeing it turn out perfect on her first try! (yeah, she's still bragging because my crust split in two that day!)
My cooking tragedies
The first time I made a big meal on my own, I made lasagna. It looked good, but I didn't let it sit after taking it out of the oven, and ended up serving "lasagna soup". Made it a second time a few months later, and forgot the cheese. I also made a cool whip pie in high school that had a crust that my boyfriend couln't cut with a knife. He had to stop eating it because he said he was afraid he'd break my mother's plate.

Awesome Slow Cooker Pot Roast
Great easy recipe--this is the only way I make a roast now. I used cream of onion soup since I have mushroom haters in my family. I also used beef broth instead of water, and 1 full envelope of onion soup mix. No need to brown the roast before cooking unless you want an easy way to make a thick gravy--then by all means brown it a little. The broth that comes from not browning the roast is a great a jus for sandwiches. Last time I made this, I used a 5 1/2 lb rump roast and shredded the meat, then placed it back in the broth. We ate it either over mashed potatoes or as a sandwich with some of the broth for dipping. The next day I cooked wide egg noodles then added a few cups of the shredded beef (with broth) to the drained noodles---YUM!

Black Magic Cake
I made this as cupcakes, and got so many compliments! I used Hershey's one-bowl chocolate frosting to top them, and they were perfect!

Angel Hair Pasta with Garlic Shrimp and Broccoli
This was good, but I did change a few things. I had to use frozen shrimp because I just can't get fresh shrimp in Iowa in January. I used fresh broccoli instead of frozen, fresh garlic, and a lot less salt. We liked it and will more than likely have it again.
