As I am sure you have heard March is National Nutrition month.  As "National" awareness goes this is a good one. Let's talk about this a moment.  One month?  Not a year or a life time?  OK - one step at a time!  I am sure you have seen the newly revamped "My Plate" which I agree makes more… MORE

Yes.....Mama Said there Would be Days Like This...  This has been the week of kids, craziness and chaos.  FIRE IN THE HOLE....The day started off with poached eggs on toast.  Sounds innocent, doesn't it?  Homemade bread, sliced thin (maybe too thin) into the toaster - ready to toast.Water… MORE

As we say goodbye to another year - it is time to reflect and look back on the great memories that 2012 brought us.  It was quite a year!  Christmas came early for me this year.    I could have called this segment, "Planes, Trains and Automobiles"  Although I am not sure that trains were… MORE

Each year as the holidays roll around I am acutely aware that this could very well be the last holiday that the entire family gets together.  It was with great joy that we welcomed our children, grandchildren and a couple of strays to celebrate Thanksgiving together.   We packed in 25 eaters… MORE

What will $50 + million buy you? It seems it was enough confuse & scare the voters of California with the threat of high food costs.  It was enough to deny us the right to know what is in our food.  Prop 37, that would have required GMO labeling in California, went down to defeat.  It was a… MORE

In the past I have written about food safety, fast food and even the highly processed 'food' that packs the freezer cases of our supermarkets.  One subject that I have not really addressed is Genetically Modified food aka GMO's.   It seems the majority of Americans and Canadians  support… MORE

Say it isn't so!  A bacon shortage?  That is what 'they' say.It must be serious - Bacon eating contests are being cancelled! What will Sunday morning breakfast of bacon and eggs be without the bacon?  That is just unthinkable. Bacon has played an important part of my life.  The smell of bacon… MORE

As the holiday season approaches I have been thinking about our family traditions and how they have changed and evolved.   Getting everyone together for Thanksgiving and Christmas is getting harder and harder.  Our Christmas day mass gathering has moved to Christmas Eve so that all the kids… MORE

About Me
Every morning my granddaughter calls and says, "Good morning Nana. Whatcha doing? Are you baking Nana?" Hence my name, Baking Nana. I love to bake bread and never get tired of it. Yeast is additive! Visit me at BakingNana.com If you would like to contact me directly please use the 'Contact Me' on my site. http://bakingnana.com/contact-me/
My favorite things to cook
I go through phases, Asian for a while then Italian then on to something else. I love experimenting with new flavors and different spices. Some times my husband will ask if we will ever have "ordinary" food again. Once in a while I have to toss him a burger just to keep quite! Actually, he is a good sport and my favorite taste tester.
My favorite family cooking traditions
In our family if it is your birthday you get to choose the menu. We have had some really interesting meals. In March we have 5 birthdays so we do one big party - what a crazy menu that is! Christmas dinner is very traditional. Sausage rolls, Prime Rib, Yorkshire Pudding, gravy, Green beans with bacon, Mashed Potatoes (the really fattening kind) and trifle for dessert. If I were to dare to omit any of those items I would be lynched.
My cooking triumphs
Mastering really great bread is probably my biggest triumph. I am always so pleased when I create a perfect Asian dish.
My cooking tragedies
There have been a few but none so horrible that I can't laugh about them now.
