This is "Beef, It is what is for dinner!" month for the ambassadors. Yep this is another 'commercial' for beef!   I have to tell you, I don't have a beef with Beef!  I am not the biggest fan of any ground beef, but that does not apply to all ground beef.  My problem with ground beef involves… MORE

A few months ago, prior to the launch of the Italian AllRecipes site, a few of us were asked if we would like to make, photograph and review some of the recipes for the new site.  Because the Italian site was not live yet the recipes were put onto the UK site, in English.  Notice I said… MORE

When picking jalapenos wear gloves and don't scratch your eyes.  Picking, like seeding can be dangerous. Grasshoppers prefer basil to dandelions.  Why? Don't remodel your kitchen during summer break when all the kids are home and expect to eat.Thoughtful eating and thinking about eating are not… MORE

I have written about my "hero"  before.  He has served his country and he has served his family well.  This week, my hero is taking on the hardest mission of his life.  You see, his sister, my niece Katherine - 35 years old is fighting the ultimate battle.  My hero is on his way to see his… MORE

Happy Spring! This is a blog of few words. Just a stroll through my garden. A few random thoughts.   Today, I have had the joy of watching a mother Phoebe teach her babies to hunt in my yard.   She came by herself for months - today she brought her babies - one by one she brought them to… MORE

Gardening in Southern California is different than other parts of the nation.  The gardening year actually starts in September.  Fall is warm and although the days are getting shorter there is a lot that can be done in the Fall, beginning with preparing the soil and digging in compost, which… MORE

I am bit embarrassed and a little nostalgic tonight.  Funny how a simple event can bring back memories long buried and seemingly forgotten and can turn an ordinary dinner out into a night to remember.  Our truck has been getting exceptional gas mileage. She is known for being a guzzler, we… MORE

One thing is certain, experimenting with bread keeps me humble.  Just about the time I think I have a new method mastered I decide to fiddle with it.  So it went with the Artisan Style No Knead bread I previously blogged about.   Rather than using my smaller round Le Creuset pan, which I have… MORE

There few things more comforting than a freshly baked loaf of bread.  It brings people together, it comforts our appetites and our souls.   I have heard all about these No Knead dough recipes, yet I resisted.  How can a no knead dough be better than a dough I worked so hard to create?  I… MORE

About Me
Every morning my granddaughter calls and says, "Good morning Nana. Whatcha doing? Are you baking Nana?" Hence my name, Baking Nana. I love to bake bread and never get tired of it. Yeast is additive! Visit me at BakingNana.com If you would like to contact me directly please use the 'Contact Me' on my site. http://bakingnana.com/contact-me/
My favorite things to cook
I go through phases, Asian for a while then Italian then on to something else. I love experimenting with new flavors and different spices. Some times my husband will ask if we will ever have "ordinary" food again. Once in a while I have to toss him a burger just to keep quite! Actually, he is a good sport and my favorite taste tester.
My favorite family cooking traditions
In our family if it is your birthday you get to choose the menu. We have had some really interesting meals. In March we have 5 birthdays so we do one big party - what a crazy menu that is! Christmas dinner is very traditional. Sausage rolls, Prime Rib, Yorkshire Pudding, gravy, Green beans with bacon, Mashed Potatoes (the really fattening kind) and trifle for dessert. If I were to dare to omit any of those items I would be lynched.
My cooking triumphs
Mastering really great bread is probably my biggest triumph. I am always so pleased when I create a perfect Asian dish.
My cooking tragedies
There have been a few but none so horrible that I can't laugh about them now.
