About this Cook
Baba is what my grandchildren call me, it;'s short for Obachan, Japanese for Grandma. It has been a challenge for me to go from cooking for a family of 5 to just cooking for me. I typically end up eating an entree for almost a whole week because I STILL cook for 5. I grew up in Hawaii and have lived away for too many years, living in VA and MN (for the last 23 years). So i love to eat things I ate as a kid in Hawaii. I have been married too many times. I have a daughter living in CA with her husband and 2 girls. My son, Ryan, passed away in 2008 at the age of 20 which was a life changing event. I have a "step" son who I care about like he was my own.We were estranged for 4 years and have slowly begun to heal that relationship. I LOVE dogs and have lost a few good companions on the way, most recently my Great Dane Edd. Thank goodness for my 2 old girls, together we are getting through a pretty tough time.
My favorite things to cook
My infamous Japanese-style spaghetti sauce ( the only difference is I put sake in it).
My favorite family cooking traditions
I wis that I lived closer to my mother so I could learn how to cook the way SHE cooks traditional Japanese foods & Hawaii-style foods.
My cooking triumphs
My cream puffs are the only item I can think of that is requested. My shortribs from an OLD cookbook that my mom gave me when I got married (the first time, haha)
My cooking tragedies
Tried to impress a friend with over garlic-ed pesto (more is better, NOT). Same friend, a red wine beef and some cassarole thing that I can't even remember (epic fail)

Fudge Puddles
It was a good recipe. I would not put a nut on top. I think its more appealing to children without nuts. I may try a vanilla based cake to make this cookie for my friend with a peanut allergy.

Too Much Chocolate Cake
Easy to bake. I made it for a bake sale and sold the entire cake slice by slice.

Pecan Tarts
It was a great recipe. There is a lot of leftover syrup. Perhaps I should deepen the pocket in the dough to accommodate more syrup. I used a wooden, rounded pestle that was perfect for shaping the dough up the sides of the pan.
