About this Cook
My favorite things to cook
It depends on my mood...or which cookbook I'm reading at the time. I like to try all kinds of things, although I'm not a huge fan of baking.
My favorite family cooking traditions
My grandma taught me to make chicken and dumplings at a young age, that was my favorite thing in the world. I also remember gathering apples in the back yard and watching her make apple pie....but her biggest food legacy is her potato salad, she has been gone 13 years and I am the only one in our family who makes it.
My cooking triumphs
My first prime rib roast......A New Orleans style Fat Tuesday feast for friends..crawfish etouffe, jambalaya, coconut shrimp, hush puppies, it was fantastic......A Thanksgiving dinner for 14 by myself......Anytime I make someone happy with the food I cook!
My cooking tragedies
An apple cake for Thanksgiving that was horrendous. It didn't set at all...I was in college and spent so much time preparing it. I was very upset. Or the roasted vegetable soup...I roasted a bunch of veggies from the garden for soup, but something was off about it..I think it was the turnips. My husband tried to eat it and couldn't, it was really bad..we flushed it down the toilet. I should have had a clue when he walked in the door and said..."What is that smell?" and not in a good way.

Floret Cheese Strudel
This was a favorite at Thanksgiving. I cut down on the cheese and white sauce, and it was very good.

Rhubarb Cake I
Yum~this cake is really good, I used a little less of the brown sugar topping, and added about 1/4 cup of sour cream to the batter...it turned out perfect and will be my official summer cake.

Banana Wheat Bread
This recipe is EXCELLENT! Very moist and tastes great...I've made muffins and added raisins once and chopped up figs once, both were great additions. I also substituted flax seeds for wheat germ.
