I love to eat, too much, and love to cook. I love when a meal comes together and find great satisfaction in making an amazing meal that people appreciate. I use this website of course, but also my trusty go to cookbooks like my mother's old Better Homes and Gardens cookbook or my Taste of Home Sweet Shop cookbook.
My favorite things to cook
I love to cook so I can get fresh-tasting but falvorful healthy foods. I always use way more garlic than is recommended, but luckily my husband doesn't mind. Recently I have been using red peppers in everything, too. I get on these trends and ride the wave until I get bored with the ingredient. The bonus of this, though, is I fully explore the combination possibilities for these foods and begin to learn what flavors they pair well with. I also love to bake. I enter contests at work and have been to take home a few prizes. I also will get a wild streak late in the evening, pull out a cookbook, and just start baking.
My favorite family cooking traditions
Every year on Christmas morning my mother made the same egg casserole, basically like a frittata. I hope to continue the tradition now that she is gone and pass it on to my kids someday.
My cooking triumphs
I have always been a recipe follower. The more I cook the more I realize that experience builds on others. As a result, I have been finding myself recently whipping up dinners on the fly thinking back on several recipes at once that I have made in the past. I am learning to trust myself and modify recipes as I go.
My cooking tragedies
I always try to read the recipe first so I know what to expect. And prepping as much as I can ahead of time is the biggest help of all. Also, since I cook with a lot of garlic I always have plenty of jars of different kinds of garlic on hand. Did you know they even have frozen chopped "spices", too? I first discovered shakeable varieties when I lived in Canada briefly and have recently seen frozen cubes here in the U.S.. If you run across these, I think they are definitely worth a try. Frozen garlic, basil, and cilantro that is pre-chopped is not only convenient, but they hold their flavor and aroma so well once thawed again.
