About this Cook
In my early 40s, I am an IT professional and I enjoy flavorful fresh foods. I enjoy cooking and I love baking, offering delicious food and see smiles on people's faces is my reward. I am learning to appreciate the local fare that the valley has to offer and grow my own herbs and vegetables, I had the blessing of inheriting my father's green thumb. For the past year I have been focusing on leaner, cleaner meals and staying away from process foods as much as possible.
My favorite things to cook
I often made a Noisettier as cake to bring to social occasions; it is very moist and not very sweet, always a favorite. I also LOVE to bake! Cookies, cakes, pies, breads, bring it on! I also love casseroles as they are often a "one bowl" dish, learning to make more crock pot meals and freezing leftovers so I can be lazy on week nights, or give the opportunity to my family to have a home cooked meal instead of processed foods if I am not around.
My favorite family cooking traditions
Grandma's Easter ham. A real good Canadian ham with the bone in, baked slowly with maple syrup and pineapple. Yum!! I have not been able to replicate this with a ham bought in the USA.
My cooking triumphs
Grilled beef brochettes (kebabs) and more recently, BBQ baby back ribs - everybody asked me where I bough them, then how I made them!! My quiches and onion pies are also requested for social functions, I keep experimenting and finding new delicious meals. My team at work requests my rum cake for celebration occasions, calling it the "booze cake". Coworkers love when I practice cake decorating as they get to eat my doodles.
My cooking tragedies
Over baked one of those American hams that was pre-cut in a spiral fashion. The thing was so dry, I ended up grounding it for sandwiches and finger foods.

Yummy Sweet Potato Casserole
This is delicious and easy to make. I ended up baking peeled yams in foil and dumping that in the mixer bowl. Couldn't be simpler and everyone loved it.

Cabbage Fat-Burning Soup
This make a HUGE pot of soup! It is delicious and I wish mine had more cabbage in it - the biggest head I could find was still on the small side. I used fresh green beans and doubled the beef broth, added Worcestershire sauce, black pepper, hot sauce and pepper flakes - I like flavor. I made another pot and changed the veggies slightly to include cauliflower which I had on hand and saved a copy on here. I add turkey meatballs for meal replacements. This will be my new winter work lunch, it will allow me to save money and lose weight, win-win! If you decide to change the vegetables around and want to preserve the weight loss property, be very aware to avoid any starchy vegetables and limit vegetables that are high in sugar. I cooked mine about an hour, anymore than that and veggies will be too soft as they keep cooking until they cool and may cook a bit again when you warm up the soup.
