I love to scrapbook and cook. I also enjoy reading and I even do a little writing in my spare time - although I have precious little of that with five kids in the house, including a toddler! It's an awesome life, though, and I wouldn't trade it for a minute!
My favorite things to cook
I like trying new recipes for the family, especially things that are easy to make and liked by kids. Sometimes that can be challenging, with all the different tastes.
My favorite family cooking traditions
Cooking always means fun time with family and friends. My parents often hosted dinner parties while I was growing up. We have continued the tradition of a huge Thanksgiving, complete with turkey and stuffing. And we always do a big cookout and fireworks show every Fourth of July. Christmas is always a big breakfast. I think of our holidays in terms of what our kitchen brings forth as a gift.
My cooking triumphs
I learned to make Boston Cream Pie from scratch. I also learned to decorate cakes - that was a real challenge! When I finally completed a "Barbie" face cake, I felt like a cooking queen!
My cooking tragedies
One time, when my youngest stepdaughter was about four, I had baked cupcakes for the other kids' classrooms. I had almost 60 cupcakes that were iced, and I only needed to finish making them into little "monsters" for Halloween. Well, my little gal decided to lick off all the icing! And the cupcakes were due in two hours! I nearly fainted, since now I couldn't use them at all. I ended up having to start from scratch - after I showered her clean from the orange and green icing that covered her head to toe! And after I finished bawling!
