I own Monte Cristo Bookshop, an independent bookstore in New London, CT. For years I worked in retail and also worked for a booking agency. I am a musician, playing rock and roll guitar and songwriting.
My favorite things to cook
My favorite things to cook are anything with white sauce. I have flavored the sauce with every herb imaginable. I also like frying chicken with different combinations of breading. The recipe that most wows people is my warm potato salad with bacon and sausage. Lately I've been perfecting quesadilla recipe.
My favorite family cooking traditions
My german grandmother would top everything with hardboiled eggs. Spinach or sauerkraut was a must on the side of every plate. My stepfather could take any piece of meat and make the most tender piece of food possible using a variety of methods. Melt in your mouth. His cooking was a rural New England style using smoked meats and long roasts.
My cooking triumphs
An egg sunny side up with perfect yolk and flipping the pan.
My cooking tragedies
Once when making chicken curry, I used coconut milk instead of coconut juice. The result was a syrupy, sugary mess. The milk is almost all sugar while the juice is all water. Since I had cooked many delicious things already at that point my roommates forgave me...or did they? I have not cooked curry since.

Corn Fritters
These are excellent! I've been using this recipe for quite some time now as a base, replacing the corn with apples, asparagus, YOU NAME IT! The best variation I used peanut butter reese's puff cereal in the batter instead of corn. After frying, I rolled them in powdered sugar. Then glazed them in melted chocolate chips/butter icing, and then squeezed a dollop of peanut butter on top of that. YUM.
