My kitties
About this Cook
Hi! I'm an engineer, married to an engineer, living in southeastern Michigan. We've got three great felines. I've been cooking for several years now (after college), but I am definitely still learning. I find cooking relaxing and really enjoy trying new techniques and dishes. My toughest job is convincing my rather picky husband to be as adventurous with food as I am. Sometimes there's nothing better than cooking a good meal with a glass of wine in hand.
My favorite things to cook
I like cooking just about anything, but I really enjoy baking and cooking recipes I received from my mother (and grandmothers) and my mother-in-law.
My favorite family cooking traditions
We don't have too many cooking traditions, but cooking spaghetti sauce according to my Grandmother's recipe (like my Mom does)and hor d'oeuvres on Christmas Eve are a couple of my favorites. Also, my Mom instilled in me the need to feed people anytime they come over. I do my best not to let anyone leave our house hungry.
My cooking triumphs
I once roasted a really great turkey breast for friends at a pre-Thanksgiving get-together. Anytime I experiment with dinner and my husband says he likes it, is a triumph.
My cooking tragedies
Oh man, there are a number. I've charred a few too many steaks on the grill, blackened cookies in the oven, and once did a very undermixed pound cake that turned out more as sweet scrambled eggs (blech).

Caramelized Butternut Squash Soup
Very tasty! Reduced the cream by a little bit, but left everything else the same. Thanks for sharing!

Gary's Stuffed Mushrooms
I used real crab and reduced the butter to one stick (4 Tbsp went in the stuffing, 4 got melted and drizzled over the mushrooms). I also sauteed the reserved stems and garlic in the butter for the stuffing. Next time I may pre-roast the mushroom caps (to cook them more thoroughly and reduce liquid). The filling mixture is delicious!

Creamed Broccoli Soup
Per other reviewer comments, I made a few changes. I used chicken broth instead of water and bullion, used only two carrots, and cooked the broccoli for only about 10 minutes, then pureed everything together. I also added only a 1/2 cup of cream, instead of 2 cups half and half and left out the flour/water step. It was plenty creamy and thick. I actually forgot the soy sauce, but would add it next time as the soup needed salt - my fault. If I made it again I might even increase the amount of broccoli to get a stronger broccoli flavor. Thanks for the recipe!
