My favorite things to cook
Lamb, steak, firm fish, scallops, complex sauces and glazes ... and did I mention steak?
My favorite family cooking traditions
Making stuffed quahogs that we harvested ourselves. The yearly eggroll-making marathon! Roasted leg of lamb, broccoli casserole, red pepper salad, and apple cake -- The signature Gerry menu!
My cooking triumphs
Introducing my wife's family to braised lamb shanks. They were certainly dubious at first, but once that first bite melted in their mouths ... I had 'em!
My cooking tragedies
It was a get-together at my best friend's parent's house. His mother asked me if I had experience cooking over an open flame. I said "Of course, from my Boy Scout days ..." She entrusted me to cook 16 turkey legs in the fire pit. I made the fire too hot, and served everyone turkey legs that were charred on the outside and raw on the inside. So embarrassing! I wanted the floor to swallow me up. I brought over a meal a week for a month after that to make amends, and also to prove that I really COULD cook. The hand spitted rabbits finally won them over, though I still get ribbed about my "turkey disaster" 13 years later!
