About this Cook
I am a passionate cook and I love to cook the food I grew up with - Southern/Soul food. I try to use packaged mixes as little as possible. Other than cooking, I'm also a passionate science nerd. :)
My favorite things to cook
I love to try recipes from Victorian and early 20th century cookbooks - I've discovered some new favorites that way!
My favorite family cooking traditions
My Mamaw and Mom's Christmas tradition of making chocolate balls - the BEST candy ever! Also my Ma's pecan and sweet potato pies . . . and cornbread and greens and deer and biscuits and squash and okra and . . .
My cooking tragedies
I haven't had all that many failures, but fudge is not in my stars.

Skillet Ham, Cabbage and Potatoes
I hardly ever make anything by a recipe, and this was no exception; however, this is a great base to build on and really make a dish you love. I cut up 2 onions (love 'em) and a link of smoked beef sausage and sauteed them in butter, using beef broth for the cooking liquid. I also diced the potatoes and parboiled them a bit ahead of time, adding them near the end of cooking so they soaked up the broth and became crispy in spots. I will definitely build on this and perhaps add tomato sauce or cream and cheese on top. Excellent and very filling!

Basic Buttermilk Corn Bread
I love this! To me, cornbread should never have honey, sugar, or any other sweetener in it - it's corn BREAD, not corn CAKE! :) It should be coarse and savory with a hint of sourness - this fits the bill perfectly! Thanks for sharing this.
