Born in NY; raised in CT and retired to Wisconsin at the end of 2005. Love the four seasons and love to cook and bake but there are only the two of us to cook and bake for.
My favorite things to cook
Roasting turkey and/or chicken. Something that takes a while to cook - pot roasts and stews so you can smell the aromas and anticipate the great meal that is forthcoming.
My favorite family cooking traditions
I finally mastered noodles, spatzle, stuffed cabbage and breads. My mom would be so proud but she never measured and I couldn't follow her receipes - they were all in her head!
My cooking triumphs
Making the Slovak Easter cheese just like my mother made it and then having everyone in the family deciding they didn't like it anyway!
My cooking tragedies
My husband and I were in our Adirondack home for Thanksgiving and were invited to our best friends for Thanksgiving dinner. I went shopping and made beautiful chocolate truffles. As we walked into our best friends' home, she grabbed one and popped it into her mouth - two seconds later I thought a missile was launched! I used bittersweet baking cocoa - there wasn't any sweetness in those truffles! I still can't believe I never licked my finger or the bowl while making those truffles!
As a child we baked a lot and I remember putting an angel food cake upside down on a soda bottle so a couple of years later I baked a pound cake (mind you I was still young) and turned the pound cake upside down on the bottle - it ended up in many pieces and I thought my mother was going to cry! I thought you put all cakes in tube pans upside down!
