Baked Ziti I

Reviewed: Oct. 24, 2003
My children are so used to allrecipes dishes that now they rate them at the table: "Go put five stars for this one, Mama!" The recipe makes a TON so we invited some guests and everybody loved it. I uesd chicken italian sausage instead of ground beef. I almost left out the sour cream but I'm glad I didn't because it was really good and didn't shout "SOUR CREAM HERE!" the way it does in, say, stroganoff.

Peanut Butter Bars I

Reviewed: Oct. 24, 2003
A hit, a major hit. Our guests loved this, we loved this, my children asked me to make it again this week. Since we only have dessert once a week, that is a big compliment! To make mixing easier, I put the pb in the pan with the butter and let it "melt" along with the butter. Then I added both to the graham crackers and powdered sugar. Otherwise, I followed it exactly. Thanks!

Pesto Pizza

Reviewed: Oct. 24, 2003
Maybe I had lame pesto or something but I think maybe that "smidge of tomato sauce" that is purposefully NOT on these pizzas would be a good addition. My homemade-pizza-loving family didn't like these and if I make them again I'll layer on some pizza sauce.

Baked Bar-be-Que Chicken

Reviewed: Oct. 24, 2003
This was fine, as fine as our BBQ sauce. I mean, that's what you would expect, right? Since it's really just chicken and BBQ sauce. It isn't quite the same as BBQ on the grill, it loses a lot, but if you have a BBQ sauce you love then this is a no-brainer that will please you.

Apple Maple Crumble Pie

Reviewed: Oct. 18, 2003
We thought this was great! I had bought 40# of apples last year and peeled, cored & sliced them, freezing them ziplock baggies for pie. With all those apples, I think I've made every apple pie out there and this (a crisp, actually, and not a genuine pie) was the biggest hit, yet by far the easiest. I did add cinnamon and nutmeg as others have suggested and I cut down on the maple syrup to 1/2 cup. Thanks Helene!

Tomato Enchilada Bake

Reviewed: Oct. 3, 2003
This is our new favorite enchilada recipe! I didn't use the fresh tomato but subbed canned for it. I didn't find it too tomato-ey for my family the way some others did, but maybe we just like tomatoes. I didn't cook the sauce, I just mixed it and spooned it over the top. Then we covered it with foil and baked it the next day. Perfect. I'm making it again next week!

Jamie's Black Beans and Rice

Reviewed: Oct. 3, 2003
I made one change: I used fresh peppers instead of frozen. Otherwise, I followed it exactly, even using white rice when we otherwise only eat brown. And my family unanimously hated it. The enchilada sauce was overwhelming and everything just seemed to sort of float in it. My eats-everything husband didn't even want his and my children obediently ate their two bites and asked to be excused.

Satiny Chocolate Glaze

Reviewed: Sep. 25, 2003
Hoo Hoo, we fought over who got to lick the bowl after this one. I didn't change anything; I won't next time either, and believe you me, there *will* be a next time, boy howdy. I had tasted our cake and didn't care for it too much plain, so I had to do something to fix it. This is what fixed it, and how!

Awesome Slow Cooker Pot Roast

Reviewed: Sep. 17, 2003
Welllll, if it were just me, I'd have only given this four stars because, while it was good, it wasn't GREAT. But it wasn't just me, it was also my husband, my four children and my parents, who were all just gaga about it. I added potatoes and carrots and we even ran out of those. I'll make it again just to hear my 15 month old old say "mo pease, mo pease" again.

B.L.T. Salad with Basil Mayo Dressing

Reviewed: Sep. 17, 2003
This was tasty! Next time I'll cut back on the bacon because it made the salad seem sort of greasy. I think I'll try using store-bought croutons, too, because it was rather time consuming to make my own.

BLT Salad

Reviewed: Sep. 17, 2003
This was good but there was just more bacon than I like to eat at once. I tried less bacon but then it seemed to lack flavor. Maybe next time I'll dinker with the dressing more: add vinegar or lemon juice to zing it up or something. Notice I said "next time" meaning we liked it well enough to make it again!

Bodacious Broccoli Salad

Reviewed: Sep. 17, 2003
This was great! I made it side by side with Allyson's Broccoli Salad and liked it better (though not a LOT better). The lemon juice added a nice zip, a little softer than the zip of vinegar alone and there was less mayo. I only used half the salt, and about 2/3 the bacon, but it still seemed a little overly salty to me. My problem was tasting the dressing before adding the bacon, which increased the salt a lot. Also, it is possible my mayo is saltier than other brands (I use Trader Joe's brand), all the more reason to go easy on the salt at first and then add more if you like it at the end. I was surprised how well it kept, too, since dressed salads are usually done for after a few hours, but the broc stayed nice and crunchy all day (maybe it would have been good longer but it didn't last!)

Alyson's Broccoli Salad

Reviewed: Sep. 17, 2003
This was tasty, but I made it side-by-side with "Bodacious Broccoli Salad" (here on Allrecipes) and liked that one better. It has less mayo and adds a bit of lemon juice and some salt (too much, actually, but you'll have to look at that review) which make a difference. I didn't like the seeds in it very much, the crunch of those doesn't seem to mesh with the crunch of the broccoli. Anyway, I would make this again, but FWIW, I like the other one a little bit better. Just a little, like a quarter of a star better! :)

Overnight Coffee Cake

Reviewed: Sep. 4, 2003
This was really tasty and easy to make because I could mix it up the night before. It was a little confusing to my 8 year old, though because step one has you pour the batter into a pan and then step three has you prepare the pan ("how do you prepare the pan once the batter is in it, mom?") I didn't follow the rest exactly as written, either: I subbed in half fresh-ground whole wheat pastry flour to make it a little healthier, used pecans instead of walnuts because we don't like walnuts much and used soured goat's milk instead of buttermilk because that's what we had. The texture is moist and light, the flavor cinnamon-y and the topping crunchy and sweet. We'll make it again!

Chicken Cordon Bleu II

Reviewed: Sep. 4, 2003
We didn't really go for this. I have one daughter who liked it but my husband, my other three daughters and I didn't. The flavor was just sort of salty and bland. The sauce was somewhat gluey and everyone scraped it off. Maybe I did something wrong?

Glazed Meatloaf I

Reviewed: Aug. 26, 2003
I like the glaze but the meatloaf itself lacked something. I think I'll try adding worcestershire sauce and some onion soup mix next time. My family seemed to like it well enough and I'll make it again, but not without experimenting.

White Chili

Reviewed: Aug. 19, 2003
Well, we all thought it was tasty, but ugly. It just looked bland. i couldn't serve it to anyone outside my family just because it looks tasteless, even though we liked eating it. As for the cheese-sticking-to-the-pan problem, I let it finish simmering and just put the cheese on top. When it had melted, I took the pot off the heat and stirred the cheese in. I didn't use a non-stick pan but still didn't have any cheese stuck to it!

Cajun Chicken Pasta

Reviewed: Aug. 12, 2003
Really really fabulous! My five year old ate five servings! I used penne instead of linguine because I don't have time to cut up pasta for my four small children, but it worked really well.

Best Chicken Salad Ever I

Reviewed: Aug. 9, 2003
We loved this! We also loved it with mango chutney instead of relish and a bit of curry powder. Just a variation, but we were happy with both. It tastes great on greens with raspberry vinaigrette, too, for a change of pace.
