Real Homemade Tamales

Reviewed: Feb. 1, 2010
Changed a couple of things based on other reviewers comments: 1. Cooked the pork with more garlic and added cumin seeds and ground oregano. Used chicken broth instead of water. 2. Used the cooled and strained broth from cooking the pork to make the masa. Used about 4 cups to make the consistency right. I've made tamales before (mind you from another recipe online because I'm not Mexican at all) and they turned out ok. My fiance is Mexican and whenever I try to make any Mexican dish, he starts to cringe because I simply had no exposure to it. So I attempted this recipe with the above modifications and got rave reviews from my whole family including him!!! And as another reviewer says, it is on the maseca bag for the tamale masa. It helps because you don't have to carry the recipe around with you because it's already going to be in the grocery cart. DEFINITELY will make again (possibly make a bunch and freeze to prepare for my wedding).

San Francisco Sourdough Bread

Reviewed: Dec. 15, 2009
The first bread I have ever made but do I love it!! Only issue I had was I tried to cut it straight out of the oven and ended up with very dense slices of bread. Need to make sure they cool prior to cutting.

Sourdough Starter

Reviewed: Dec. 15, 2009
OMG!!! I have NEVER thought I could make sourdough starter!!! I loved the bread I made out of this starter. Only problem is since I don't make bread too much, the starter gets in the way and gets dumped. Will definitely be making this again soon.

Fettuccine Alfredo V

Reviewed: Dec. 15, 2009
Very good alfredo sauce. I have since modified it ever so slightly. Instead of parmesan cheese, I usually use gruyere and another type of cheese that I have on hand. I also add white pepper and cayenne pepper for a kick prior to adding the cheeses. I also cook the noodles to al dente in heavily salted water, drain, then cook the rest of the way in the sauce. I think it makes it taste better.

White Chocolate Fruit Tart

Reviewed: Dec. 10, 2009
I LOVE fruit tarts.. and that's an understatement. Decided to make it for future in-laws. Have made several other desserts before so they were looking forward to the buche de noel in particular. I thought it was strange that this used white chocolate but figured the good reviews meant something. My future sister-in-law likes fruit tarts but didn't tell me until after she had it that she didn't like the custard ones. She loved it so much she not only had several pieces but polished off her kids' pieces. I wanted to make it all berries so I used only strawberry, blueberry, and raspberry. Since I didn't have the canned pineapples (don't believe canned pineapples taste that great) I juiced about 3 oranges and made the glaze that way instead. It was a HIT!! I tried it another time exactly the way the recipe stated for my sister-in-law's bday and she told me the original way was better. I guess using OJ tastes better than using the pineapple.

Buche de Noel

Reviewed: Dec. 10, 2009
Very light. Always a hit at whatever party I bring it to. I find it easier to travel with it when wrapped in saran wrap completely and placed on a plate. Can be dressed up on location and that prevents further cracking.

Spicy Fisherman's Pie

Reviewed: Feb. 5, 2008
I LOVED this recipe. Next time will make more so that I can freeze it for easy cooking. I used jack cheese on top and it came out SO GOOD!! I will try Gruyere next time and might add some thyme for more flavor.

Cajun Seafood Pasta

Reviewed: Feb. 11, 2007
I made this for both me and my boyfriend. It was really spicy but oh so good. I exchanged the scallops for chicken because my boyfriend does not like scallops and I think it might have turned up better.
