Had a variety of apples that were getting old, and needed to be used. Tried this recipe, adding vanilla, cinnamon and nutmeg and cooked at 350 degrees for the entire time. My crust was falling apart, and my lattice didn't really look like it should have, but since I wasn't making this for company, I decided it didn't matter. I did as others had suggested adding 2/3's of the butter/sugar mixture to the apples before adding them to the shell and covering with the lattice. The other 1/3 had to be heated and more water was necessary in order to bring it back to a liquid. I then poured that 1/3 over the top of the pie. It was delicious.... Much better than anticipated. This truly is a uniquely superior recipe for a better than average apple pie! Many thanks to Grandma Ople and Moshasmama for sharing it!
