Sesame Chicken

Reviewed: Aug. 10, 2012
Pretty good. Not anything like what I get at the resturants, but had a good flavor. I used canned diced green chilies instead of bell pepper, added more garlic and ginger, used red wine vinegar instead of rice wine, and added more soy sauce. I think the recipe would be much better if the marinade was doubled. Definantly adding to rotation! Thanks! Oh, and DO NOT use oil to toast the seeds. If you don't feel comfortable with dry frying the seeds, buy pre-toasted sesame seeds.

Calzone

Reviewed: Sep. 22, 2003
This is very good and is our monthly rotation. I like to include pepperoni, cooked crumbled bacon, ham/canadian bacon, cooked crumbled sausage and lots of motz. cheese. In addition to brushing the top with melted butter and garlic salt, I also sprinkle with a little dried parsley for color and garnish. It does take a while to prepare this recipe but it certainly becomes a family favorite. The end result is very beautiful and is perfect for entertaining. I also recommend having extra pizza sauce or ranch dressing on hand for dipping.

Burrito Pie

Reviewed: Nov. 20, 2002
This is a new family favorite! I've made it several times now and its very easy to make and doesn't take a very long time. We found it easier to use the large flour tortillas 4 1/2 of them. If you tear some in half, you can use one, and then one half to make a perfect layer. I serve it with a salad for a complete meal. Oh, and I find it makes about 12 servings, not 16. For those of you on weight watchers, at 12 servings, it's 11 points per serving.

Sirloin Steak with Garlic Butter

Reviewed: Oct. 31, 2002
I really liked the flavor of the steak so I'll give it 5 stars for the recipe but my steak turned out somewhat tough. I have never been an expert steak griller so I won't hold it against this recipe. I didn't find the sauce too overpowering like some of the other reviews. I made this with the Cheddar and Bacon Mashed Potatoes recipe and poured a little of the prepared juice into the potatoes and it really added a little kick.

Bacon and Cheddar Mashed Potatoes

Reviewed: Oct. 31, 2002
Not bad. I think I'd like a little more flavor but I did enjoy them. I will likely make these again. I think I might try boiling the potatoes in a little chicken stock/broth next time for some added flavor. I did find it useful to buy the precooked bacon to shop up and add instead of having to cook bacon in addition to the potatoes. I prefer the Hormel black label brand. There's much less fat than with the Oscar Meyer precooked bacon. It's the perfect texture and doneness for this recipe. I recommend this recipe. It went very well with grilled steak and salad.

Taco Casserole

Reviewed: Oct. 31, 2002
I thought this recipe was pretty good. I added a can of refried beans to the soup mixture and stirred it well before putting in the casserole dish. I also dribbled a jar of salsa in the middle layer of the dish. It really helped spice it up. I also served it with tortilla chips since it is almost 'dip-ish'. It was good! Add a salad and some hot queso for chip-dipping and you've got a great meal.

Soft Christmas Cookies

Reviewed: Oct. 19, 2002
I made these cookies just as described and did not overbake and yet they were very firm and almost crunchy. I would not call these soft.

Absolutely Ultimate Potato Soup

Reviewed: Oct. 15, 2002
This has to be one of the best tasting potato soup recipes I've tried. I think next time I will try adding some shredded cheese in the last step or stir some into a hot bowl of soup for an added kick. I did find that this recipe takes much longer to prepare than the recipe states. The times listed in the preparation are assuming you're starting out with peeled/diced potatoes, chopped onions, chopped celery, etc. If you have none of this prepared ahead of time (and who does?) then this recipe will take much longer to make. Sure, it's worth the time it takes to make it...but don't use this recipe for as last-minute dinner when you're in a hurry or when you're really tired and just wanting a good soup. It took me about two hours to make this from start to finish. The cooking of the potatoes in the middle of the recipe before the stock is added is an excellent step and it helps the potatoes cook much faster than they would have just by boiling alone. The puree step at near the end is very important. It highly affected the texture and flavor of the soup. Don't skip that step! Also, please don't think that "chicken broth" and "chicken stock" are the same thing. They're not! I wasn't able to find chicken stock at Walmart, I had to go to Albertsons. If you use chicken broth you'll get a much different result. I also noticed this recipe has no salt added. I did find adding salt to my bowl of soup helped the flavor even more. I suggest adding some salt! I hi

Ham and Cheese Pasta Bake

Reviewed: Oct. 10, 2002
It took an extra 20 minutes to cook this dish completely even though my oven was preheated and I followed the recipe precisely. At the descried time, the food was only very warm in the oven. The pasta was soft but extremely doughy and uncooked, not unlike pasta put into a bowl of warm water for a length of time. The taste was very bland and "cheap" and my husband didn't like it either. I won't make this recipe again. The only thing I can think that could have helped would have been to start the cooking process with boiling water instead of cold, except then it would have been difficult to mix completely prior to cooking.
