Cranberry Sauce

Reviewed: Dec. 4, 2014
I have used this as a base for years and absolutely love it's simplicity and flavor. I do as many others have suggested and add a bit of Grande Marinier along with some autumn spices. I like that I know exactly what's in this and that it can be made ahead of time. Thank you :)

Chef John's Caramel Apple Pie

Reviewed: Dec. 4, 2014
This was such a hit…it disappeared quicker than the pumpkin pies I made :) Very easy, I followed the directions as written only adding a few extra spices and some vanilla to the caramel sauce. I chose granny smiths because I didn't want it to be too sweet. We loved this pie and I will be using it from now on! Thank you for another great recipe, Chef John!

Slow Cooker Stuffing

Reviewed: Dec. 4, 2014
This was quite good! I used veggie broth so I could eat it too (vegetarian) and added garlic to the sauté. Did not add all the broth, started slowly just to moisten and added as I checked throughout the cook. I did not start on high, due to other reviews, rather cooked from 11:30 till about 4:00 on low and it cooked a bit much for my taste, so next time I will start it later. I used Pepperidge Farm boxed stuffing mix and added a few sprigs of chopped fresh poultry herbs to the mix. Also, as I added the broth, I did as others suggested and placed a clean dish towel under the crock lid to soak up extra moisture. Thank you so much for the recipe and all the previous reviews, combined with my own very minor tweaks, this was a great stuffing that left open the oven and stovetop!

Dumplings

Reviewed: Nov. 6, 2014
I've only tried dumplings a couple times before and failed at each…but this recipe is perfect for my guys :) I didn't try these (I'm vegetarian) but I did make them for my own chicken soup recipe tonight for my son and husband. Son has never been a fan of anything 'white' to eat, but he had at least 5 of these in his soup…he actually went for seconds! Thank you :) The only thing I did differently was cook them longer because I did a crock pot soup and it wasn't quite simmering so I cooked about twice as long as suggested, and I did add the parsley and a couple pinches of minced garlic (because almost everything we eat needs more garlic around here) Thanks again for a great recipe.

Asparagus Quiche

Reviewed: Oct. 5, 2014
This is very good! Instead of steaming the asparagus I sautéed it with some garlic in the bacon grease after I fried the bacon. Also, I am vegetarian so I split everything (except bacon, I halved that) and I made the second one with mushrooms that I sautéed in garlic butter with the remaining asparagus. I add tarragon to all egg dishes and a bit of cayenne. Only had lactose-free whole milk but it worked fine! Would probably be better with the half-half, though! Thank you for a wonderful Sunday brunch!

Artichoke Chicken

Reviewed: Nov. 20, 2013
I followed Jim F's advice and sauteed onion and mushrooms in butter, a pinch of red pepper flake, and garlic, spinach on bottom followed by seared chicken breast, topped with onion/mushroom mix, marinated artichoke (which I chopped fine), then sprinkled with cooked and chopped bacon (per DH's opinion)..then I topped with mayo/parm mix and some italian breadcrumbs. They loved it (can't speak for myself as I am vegetarian) but they have very good taste. Thank you for the recipe :) This one is a keeper!

Easy Meatloaf

Reviewed: Sep. 24, 2013
This was a great base recipe. Using two pounds of g.b., I did what others suggested with the worcestershire, sauteed onions and a red bell pepper in lots of butter with garlic. I was out of milk, so I used a bit under a cup of chicken broth instead and added another egg to make up for the milk. I also added 4 pieces of cooked, chopped bacon. A dash of nutmeg to the topping. My guys liked it...being vegetarian, I didn't try it, but if my men like it I know it must be good. Will be keeping this one :) Thank you for sharing! Also, I formed a loaf on a sheet (makes for easy removal of grease) and cooked at 350 for about half an hour, and another half hour at 365, let sit for about 10 minutes before serving.

Spanish Rice

Reviewed: Jul. 17, 2013
This was a good jumping off recipe where flavors are concerned. What interested me the most was the method of cooking the rice. I used veggie broth, added much more seasonings, substituted 2 cans of mild green chili for the green pepper and instead of tomatoes I used tomato sauce. Perhaps these changes had something to do with the fact that it took the 15 minute cook/15 minute rest twice before my rice was cooked through? I had the rice for breakfast this morning and it was delicious again :) Thank you.

Simple Crustless Spinach and Mushroom Quiche

Reviewed: Jun. 28, 2013
I bet it's awesome as is, but I had to alter...only added 1c sour cream (all I had) and about a quarter cup half n half, didn't have spinach either but added green onion. Sauteed mushrooms in a bit of truffle oil with the butter. Also, mine cooked at 350 for 35 minutes, then I shut oven off and continued to cook for another 12 minutes...perfect :) Husband and I both really liked it :) Thank you for submitting a very nice recipe!

Sweet and Sour Sauce I

Reviewed: Apr. 29, 2013
Made with no variations, it is very good and my favorite part is that it's not that nasty pink color you get at most Chinese restaurants.

The Best Chicken Fried Steak

Reviewed: Apr. 14, 2013
Made this tonight, it had good reviews. I am vegetarian, so I didn't try it, but my meat eating people liked it. The only things I did differently was for the flour mix I added extra garlic and some Red Robin seasoning...I reserved the remaining flour mix for my gravy instead of plain flour, and I added some sausage drippings. Thank you for posting this, I am sure it will be a regular for our Sunday breakfast!

Spanish Rice

Reviewed: May 4, 2012
Great basic recipe to which I added the following tweaks: I sauté'd the garlic, onion, celery and green pepper in olive oil, omitted the tomatoes, rather after cooking my brown rice in veggie broth (I'm vegetarian) I added about a quarter cup of tomato sauce. Mixed them together with the rice and added extra chili powder and some cumin. Very good! Thank you for the great recipe :)

Sautee'd 3 X mushrooms with fresh garlic and minced shallot, added the wine with veggie broth (I'm vegetarian) and two buck Chuck. Added some dried sage for a gravy type taste and it was a big hit over farfalle pasta. Thank You

White Sauce for Pasta

Reviewed: Nov. 15, 2011
Just made this and it was delish. I used real butter, made a roux with the flour and added lemon juice and some mushrooms I sauteed with shallot and garlic in butter. I topped mine off with extra sharp white cheddar. Great recipe.

Creamy Banana Bread

Reviewed: Aug. 21, 2007
I've made so many different banana breads over the years, but this recipe has replaced all the others. Made according to the recipe (doubling the topping) this is the perfect banana bread. I've had so many requests for this bread! It never lasts more than a day (and I make two batches). Thanks so much for a wonderful banana bread recipe!

Made these for the big football game (don't know if you can use the super-word or not) and they were gobbled right up! I made per instructions, no alterations at all. Thank you for this easy, interesting, and delicious recipe!

Stuffed Strawberries

Reviewed: Jun. 11, 2007
Though I didn't eat any, I did get good reviews from my family for this treat. The only negative I would have for it would be they get messy on the plate very quickly. Otherwise, people ate them up and loved them. I made with vanilla instead of liquor...this may have been a mistake (and it's why I still gave 5 star!) They looked beautiful, as well. (until they got messy!) I topped with shredded chocolate bar and lots of people liked that. Thank you for a simple, pretty presentation of sweets!
