Beef Bulgogi

Reviewed: May 17, 2011
This was wonderfully delicious, and straight-forward to make. I took the repeated users' suggestion to use brown sugar, marinaded an hour (it was all I had), and wrapped the eventual product in red leaf lettuce. Definitely set off the fire alarm twice with all the smoke, but it was SO worth it. I'll be making this again. Many, many times.

Award Winning Soft Chocolate Chip Cookies

Well well well... all the comments were right. Absolutely delicious, the pudding blends in like a charm. I'm sure these would have stayed moist and yummy for a while, but my friends ate them all the day I made them.

Buttermilk Pancakes II

Reviewed: Jul. 5, 2011
These pancakes really are as incredible as the nearly 30,000 loyalists say they are. I didn't tweak a thing in the recipe, and the pancakes came out beautifully. I'd be curious to try adding in a little vanilla or orange zest for flavor, but really, these are just amazing.

Apple Crisp II

Reviewed: Sep. 19, 2011
Delicious. I made 1.5x the topping, and halved the water, and enjoyed it that way. Haven't tried the exact recipe, but I can't imagine it would be disastrous. This is just such a solid crisp... cinnamony, crunchy, smooth, absolutely lovely. Top it with some vanilla ice cream.

Best Big, Fat, Chewy Chocolate Chip Cookie

Reviewed: Oct. 17, 2011
Amazingly good cookie. I had to substitute maple syrup in for the vanilla (I just didn't have vanilla), but otherwise followed the recipe to a t. Beautiful, perfect cookies. Absolutely delicious taste. I feel like I should have to fork over $3 every time I eat one of these.

Soft Oatmeal Cookies

What lovely cookies! They're not too sweet, they're chewy and yet firm. Excellent. Like everyone recommended, I did not flatten them with a sugared fork.

Old Fashioned Potato Kugel

Delicious! Followed the recipe exactly, and was so pleased. The result is creamy and well-balanced. The top was a little grey (as someone had mentioned), but really, who cares? This stuff is YUM.

Orange Juice Tzimmes

Reviewed: Apr. 8, 2012
What an AMAZING tzimmes. When I was cooking it, it looked so uninspiring... but as that hour of simmering passed, my goodness, it starts to smell incredible. By the end it, it was just incredible. ONE SUBSTITUTION, ONE CHANGE: apricots instead of prunes, 2/3 the sugar.

Stovetop Granola

Reviewed: Jun. 29, 2012
This granola is flavorful. Of course, I did the tweaks recommended by other users--broiling to toast the oats, adding some other fruits, cutting the oil, etc. I think I was expecting something more like store-bought granola, and this is more oat-y. That is 100% evident from the recipe, just, don't expect this to taste like a box of granola. Expect it to taste like buttery oats with fruit and nuts.

Golden Orange Frosting

Reviewed: Jul. 3, 2012
Nice frosting! This is very much what you make of it. Do you want something really stiff? Put in lots of sugar and less juice. Do you want something more liquidy? More juice, less sugar. To do this, I got the butter/zest/salt base down (omitted the yolk, like other reviewers said), then took turns adding a cup of sugar and a few teaspoons of juice. This let me bulk up in volume while keeping a good consistency, and when it came time to spread it on the cake, I got it as stiff/liquidy as I wanted. I loved being able to control it like that. I pretty much doubled the recipe. That got me more than enough icing for a three-layer 9-inch round cake.

Rainbow Citrus Cake

Reviewed: Jul. 3, 2012
FUN. Yes, the cake is a lot of work, but it's so special. I've never seen anything like this anywhere else... neither as the eater or the chef. And what a fascinating combination of flavors and colors. // I was, honestly, grossed out by using shortening, but the end product is tasty. And by the time you're eating it, you've already forgotten what went into it. // I separated the layers with store-bought lemon curd (get the runnier kind, versus the thick gel), and then made the "Golden Orange Frosting" from this site. I love them both with this cake. // This was my first time making the cake, and from preheating to the last washed dish, this took me 3 hours on the dot. // I would absolutely make this again.

Burrata Bruschetta with Figs

Reviewed: Aug. 17, 2012
So lovely. I'd never had grilled figs before, but holy whoa, they were DELICIOUS. I didn't even have a grill--I just used a cast iron skillet. My only suggestion for improvement--go ahead and put the fig ON the bread with the cheese, instead of beside it. The combination of the cheese+bread+fig+balsamic is absolutely wild. Fresh mozzarella would also work nicely here. The figs are what make it.

Classic Spanish Sangria

Reviewed: Sep. 16, 2012
This was a tasty, easy-to-make sangria. I cut the rum in half and added cherries. My main qualm is that what makes the sangria taste good--the citrus fruit--is annoying once you go to drink it. Do you strain the slices? Do you eat them? Eating them makes a mess. Next time, I think I'll make this sangria the same way, but before serving it to guests I'll strain out the citrus slices and throw in only edible fruits, like pineapple, apple, or cherries. I don't know how that will affect the taste, but the experience might improve?

Chef John's Gazpacho

This was quite good--I like the mix of chunk and puree, as well as the spiciness. I just wish it were thicker! Could be great with some toasted bread.

Spinach and Leek White Bean Soup

Reviewed: Mar. 14, 2013
This was a great soup. I found myself skeptical, but as soon as I went to eat it (after a fair amount of salting, granted), wow, impressive! The cumin blends in really nicely, and I loved that there were various textures--the leeks, the spinach, the beans, the couscous. I felt really full after, and it felt like a healthy full.
