Homemaker, empty nester, avid gardner, would rather cook than do almost anything...
My favorite things to cook
Anything comforting. Gumbo, cinnamon rolls, pastas, but also love creating wonderful salads and new ideas for vegetables.
My favorite family cooking traditions
My husband is an attorney and for Christmas, instead of the stacked boxes of fruit, turkey, nut and candy from all the vendors that you see every day, he sends his very favorite out of town clients a large box of homemade goodies and his in town clients a homemade pecan pie. I have such fun putting these together. It's hectic, but I remember how proud I was to give teachers and special people boxes of the treats my grandmother made when I was a child, and I love keeping those recipes alive. My sons are grown now, and I love their interest in cooking and food. My oldest son's girlfriend actually made him a cookbook for his birthday!
My cooking triumphs
Three wedding cakes, and back to back wins at the church cake contest.
My cooking tragedies
My precious cousin had been recently diagnosed with cancer and was undergoing treatment. I knew that he LOVED coconut cream pie and I really wanted to make one for him. I had recently purchased a new cookbook where I had found some really wonderful recipes, I mean these were especially good. Not having a coconut pie recipe that I was committed to, I decided to use that one and embarked on the project with great faith. Since my husband also loves coconut cream pie, I doubled the recipe and made two. Several hours later, we dropped by and I proudly handed over the pie. Upon arriving home, we cut into my husband's, only to discover possibly the nastiest most awful concoction of coconut and custard. This was inedible, and my cousins have always considered me such a good cook. I called immediately to tell then, but too late...they had already tasted the dreadful stuff. We still laugh about it.
