About this Cook
I am a Christian, a mom of 7 and a grandmother of 7. I always pray before cooking a big meal, letting God guide me through the process. And I need all the help I can get, as it gets a little hair raising preparing meals for the 8 of us that's living here! I think I get a little too picky when cooking though, and probably need to lighten up a bit!
My favorite things to cook
I don't think I really have a favorite thing to cook, I just love to cook in general! It's fun to try new things and to get a little creative along the way!
My favorite family cooking traditions
I usually cook most of the meals, but on Thanksgiving my husband likes to cook the turkey and the fixing with the help of my oldest son, and my daughters help me with all the pies. I make several different kinds, so each daughter will help me with a certain ones. We have 2 pecan trees in our yard, so the kids will gather a few days before Thanksgiving and help crack pecans for the pecan pies. (Oh, and the reason my husband likes cooking the turkey has absolutely nothing to do with my cooking tragedy story below:)
My cooking triumphs
Anything I cook that comes out the way I want it!!
My cooking tragedies
I don't even have to think about it...!! Almost 30 years ago, I tried cooking my first Thanksgiving dinner on my own. And let me tell you, it was a major disaster! The turkey came out grey (don't ask me how) and hard, the chocolate cream pie was runny, and, to make a long story short, the only thing that came out good that I remember were the canned vegetables!! (Oh well, at least that's something)! Since the turkey came out so hard, it was nicknamed the "chainsaw turkey", because a chainsaw was probably needed to cut it!! Little did I know, though, upon sharing this story with my children, that years later my youngest teenage son would share this story with our whole church when asked to speak on stage. He talked about prayer, and the difference that prayer has made between how I cook now and the my chainsaw turkey meal of non-prayer before cooking meal times then! I have now learned to watch what I tell my kids, it just may come out later!!

Cinnamon Swirl Bundt Coffee Cake
This came out very moist and the cinnamon flavor was delicious! I substituted buttermilk for sour cream (didn't have any), added a tsp of cinnamon and a dash of nutmeg to the batter along with a little more sugar than stated, and I made a glaze to drizzle over the top using the recipe "Baking is Awesome" gave but doubling it.

Aw-some Coleslaw
This does remind me of the slaw at KFC. I made it for a cookout our family had and everyone loved it! I did as another reviewer had stated and used the bag slaw mix, keeping the sauce recipe pretty much the same with maybe just a drop more vinegar. I diced the onions and wisked them in with the sauce before pouring over the cabbage and carrots, doubling the recipe and using the whole bag of cabbage mix. Very, very good!!

Classic Macaroni Salad
I use 2 16oz boxes (alot of us), just adding the green pepper and onion for vegetables, sometimes adding some drained cans of tuna too. After the sauce is mixed (I use a little less vinegar and sugar than stated) in with the pasta I sprinkle and mix in some dill weed and cilantro. I've also made this only using the sauce, grilled chicken strips and cooked, frozen broccoli. This is a regular at family cookouts and a favorite.
