Simple Whole Roasted Chicken

Reviewed: May 20, 2014
Whole family loved it, including my picky sons. I did double the cloves, allspice, nutmeg, and cinnamon, like one of the featured reviewers suggested in the magazine version.

Slow Cooker Pulled Pork

Reviewed: Apr. 18, 2014
As is, recipe is only a 3. (I have used a plain pork tenderloin before to "save" a recipe, and discovered it was not easy to shred nor as tasty as a shoulder. So I used a ~2.6 lb pork tenderloin roast, which had more fat). After following other suggestions with letting it sit in crock pot on 'keep warm' setting for an additional hour, which ended up being 1½ since had errands to run, it raised review a point. I used Sweet Baby Rays Hickory and Brown Sugar BBQ sauce which is my favorite- but that still was inadequate. Once I added approximately 1 to 1½ tablespoons of Apple Cider Vinegar, it finally had that special punch to it, and became a 5.

Soft Peanut Butter Cookies

Reviewed: Jan. 14, 2014
I've had this recipe for a while, and did make as is; but eventually tweaked it more to my liking. Did ¾ cup "dry", ie less oily version of peanut butter, decreased white sugar to 1/4, but upped brown sugar to 2/3. Decreased flour to 1&1/2 cup, and added in peanut butter morsels since strangely I've never like the nut pieces of peanuts in peanut butter cookies. And these turn out great. Boston Market used to have soft peanut cookies a long long time ago, and that inspired me to search for this recipe. The store brands are not soft and always have real peanut pieces in them. Double yuck.

Best Cocktail Meatballs

Reviewed: Jan. 14, 2014
Hoping for the best with all the good reviews, but just tasted like meat and ketchup, even after allowing it to sit in crock pot for a long time.

Sweet Bell Pepper Rice

Reviewed: Sep. 24, 2013
Agree with other reviewer saying spices were overpowering; and peppers were off sync too. Added butter, and salt to try to salvage, but in the end the flavors just didn't come together for me.

Brown Sugar-Glazed Home-Style Meat Loaf

Good. But was missing something, despite my addition of garlic.

Nancy's Chocolate Fudge Pie

Reviewed: Oct. 1, 2012
Texture undesirable, but taste was good. Removed from stove top once it got consistency of pudding; however when I refrigerated it, it never got more firm. Problematic when 'cutting b/c it becomes a challenge to remove slice. Added a wee bit more sugar and more margarine since didn't have butter flavored extract, otherwise followed most of directions as is.

Cheesy Creamed Spinach

Reviewed: May 11, 2012
I think this will be awesome with tweaks. I agree w/another reviewer 3, 10 ounce bags are pretty intimidating so I only used 2. A stock pot is better suited at least until wilted; but I'll personally use frozen chopped spinach the next time. And even though I cut back the heavy cream there was still this surplus that never absorbed. That being said it was better than another recipe I've tried, and closer to the taste I love at a major restaurant chain. Will try to make again to get the texture down. Husband loved it.

First time eating a turkey burger that I didn't wish I had the "real" thing.

Chewiest Brownies

Reviewed: Jan. 18, 2011
This is the first brownie I've made from this site that my 5 y.o. liked and devoured. Husband liked too. From reading the other reviews, I went with a round cake pound, which made brownie thicker. Depth of chocolate reminds me of the Ghirardelli brownie mixes.

Next Day Turkey Soup

Reviewed: Dec. 11, 2010
This was great, I was really impressed with the way it turned out! Didn't measure, just used left over dark turkey meat and 'scrapes' that I had brined and soup turned out very hearty. I think the biggest change is I used white potatoes instead of the sweet potatoes and used Ditalini pasta instead of the ultra micro kind. Anyway, thanks for sharing.

Cornbread Muffins II

Reviewed: Nov. 8, 2010
I really enjoyed this. I'm actually one of those odd people that can eat sweet or unsweet cornbread and I decided to leave the sugar out. Turned out great.

Chewy Brownies

Reviewed: Nov. 8, 2010
I thought these were pretty good. But my husband just thought they were so so even after cocoa was upped to ½ cup, he said it could have been more chocolaty. With a few more tweaks I think he'll be won over.

One Minute Chocolate Icing

Reviewed: Oct. 1, 2010
This had a good taste, but couldn't get the texture down. Even after making this the second time and cooking twice as long I could still taste the sugar crystals, which isn't noticeable until it cools down. Not sure how to take the 'crunchiness' out of the icing.

Salad Dressing Cupcakes

Reviewed: Sep. 29, 2010
These were good. A little concerned when the batter still had mayo-like taste. But cooked up beautifully. These were dense, but not spongy like others experienced; but I used cake flour. Made a trial batch tonight, planning to make again tomorrow for our Fall Festival this weekend.

Sweet Potato Pie VII

Reviewed: Sep. 11, 2010
Looking forward to making this again this year. Made it last year and remembered thinking it tasted very close to the way my mom made back home in N.C. I did add brown sugar and cinnamon and nutmeg as others suggested, and left out the salt. Thanks for sharing, especially since most pies in Georgia are pumpkin!

Famous Chicken Adobo

Reviewed: Sep. 8, 2010
When I first sampled this while I was cooking, I thought it was good; but after sitting down to eat it the pepper just became overpowering. Surprisingly I did not have a problem with the vinegar or soy sauce even though I used lite version. Deciding whether I should make again w/modifications recommended by others. My husband politely told me to remove it from the (remake) list, while my picky 5 y.o. actually liked it.

Oven Pot Roast

Reviewed: Apr. 4, 2010
This was great. I did make a few modifications, but the base of the recipe I'm sure is still superb. The biggest two were that I cooked longer, and lower; and I added a can of french onion soup (liquid kind) b/c I wanted more gravy. I also added celery and carrots. (And made mashed potatoes on the side.) Turned out awesome.
