Paprika Chicken with Sour Cream Gravy

Reviewed: Nov. 28, 2009
I made this for dinner last night and served it with egg noodles and broccoli. The end result was really bland in my opinion. I followed the recipe exactly with one minor exception, I used diced white onion instead of green because that's what I had on hand. The end result was a very pale "gravy" that only tasted like sour cream. This recipe needs a lot more flavour, salt, pepper and about half the amount of sour cream in order for it to be a good dish.

Yummy Bacon and Cheddar Waffles

Reviewed: Oct. 25, 2009
These were yummy - and a break from the sweet waffles we normally eat - even though we did use maple syrup. I used 8 strips of bacon...and plenty of Pam because they stick! The batter will seem very runny until you add the stiffly beaten egg whites.

Fajita Marinade I

Reviewed: Oct. 25, 2009
This was pretty good - although I wish there had been a bit more smokiness to it. I will definitely use this recipe again, but next time, I will increase the liquid smoke flavoring to 1 tsp.

Cheesy Sliced Potatoes

Reviewed: Oct. 20, 2009
These were brain-dead easy to make and SO good! I scaled the recipe to 4 servings as it was just my husband and I and our two small children. I followed the recipe to a T with one exception...and it wasn't intentional. I mis-read the recipe method and combined the sour cream with the milk and poured it all over the potatoes, topped with cheese and cooked for another 4 minutes. The end result was very good...even the kids ate it and that's saying something!!

Country Apple Dumplings

Reviewed: Oct. 19, 2009
I rated this dessert 4 stars, but it could definitely be 5 stars with a few tweaks. I cut the recipe in half because I was making this for my husband and kids. I also used Lobo apples because that's what I had on hand. I messed this up a little bit in that I melted the butter in the microwave and added the sugar and cinnamon, but it would have worked out much better if I'd done it on the stovetop and melted the sugar (with a touch of water) and then added the butter. I also wish that I'd used half an apple for each. As it was, I used 1/4 apple per crescent roll, but it would have been tastier with 1/2 an apple; I also wish that I had used more than 1/2 can of Mountain Dew. Anyway - the end result was very, very good (perhaps a bit too sweet for us, so maybe less sugar next time) but I will defintely make this again.

Virginia Apple Pudding

Reviewed: Oct. 12, 2009
I followed the recipe exactly for this dish - and while the flavour was excellent, the middle of the cake was not cooked thoroughly and the edge was getting overcooked. Next time I make this - and there likely will be a next time given the speed with which you can make this dessert - I will use a larger dish than the "small baking dish" dish called for in the recipe.

Baked Scallops

Reviewed: Oct. 12, 2009
I made these tonight for dinner for my family and they were good - but not incredible. I used sea scallops (larger variety than bay scallops, and I also minced the garlic into the bottom of the casserole dish and then dredged the scallops in the butter/garlic mixture. The only other change I made was to use panko instead of breadcrumbs. The end result was a nice, garlicky dish...but it didn't have a lot of "wow" to it.

Slow Cooker Pulled Pork

Reviewed: Oct. 6, 2009
The flavour of this pork was pretty good (but how can you go wrong with bottled bbq sauce!), and none of the root beer flavour came through. The reason I gave this dish only 2 stars is that the texture of the pork tenderloin after shredding was completely mushy...this cut of meat was so tender that it had absolutely no texture to it whatsoever. I may make this again, but will definitely use a cheaper, sturdier cut of meat.

Apple Crisp IV

Reviewed: Oct. 6, 2009
My family did not enjoy this. I cut the recipe in half and we found that there was just not enough apples! I've never had an apple crisp that has a bottom 'crust', I don't think I'll be making this version again.

Steak House Au Gratin Potatoes

Reviewed: Oct. 6, 2009
Yup - these are good! Nice and garlicky with a good cheddar flavour. I used red potatoes because that's all I had and the end result was good....but I bet it would be better with Velveeta instead of real cheddar.

Merrick's PBJ n' Banana Burritos

Reviewed: Sep. 27, 2009
I fed this to my 4-year old son for lunch today, and he gobbled it up! I scaled the recipe to use a small 6-inch, whole wheat tortilla and I used blueberry jam in place of the apricot jelly (only because that's what I had on hand). The end result was consumed in record speed! This will be a favourite go-to in our house!!

Apple Pie by Grandma Ople

Reviewed: Sep. 26, 2009
This was absolutely delicous pie. I used Lobo apples because that's what I had on hand and it turned out great with this delicious cooking apple. I brushed the top of the pie with a bit of cream to give it a nice sheen (I tried to use the 'glaze' as mentioned by another reviewer, but by the time I was ready to brush the top of the pie with it, the glaze had become quite thick and kind of gloopy, I had to add a few Tbsp of water to thin it just in order to mix it with the apples). The pie was very tasty in the end, but I would suggest making the glaze that you mix in with the apples, the moment you are ready to use it.

Sarah's Applesauce

Reviewed: Sep. 10, 2009
I made this applesauce in my slow cooker using double the recipe - the end result was really good. I did use brown sugar instead of white - and we found it a bit sweet in the end. I used some tart Lobo apples, so next time, I think I will use less sugar (start with 1/4 cup for 8 apples) and I think I will finish it with lemon juice to give the flavor a bit of depth.

Lemon Vinaigrette Salad

This was a very quick and easy green salad to go along with a pasta dish I was making for company. The end result was delicious and simple; exactly what I was looking for.

Daria's Slow Cooker Beef Stroganoff

Reviewed: Aug. 19, 2009
I made this for supper last night and we thought it was ok in the end. I followed the recipe exactly with exception to adding 1 whole onion and used sirloin steak instead of round. The final product was good - but not out of this world. Thanks for the recipe, but I think I'll keep looking for my perfect stroganoff recipe.

Honey Mustard Grilled Chicken

Reviewed: Aug. 17, 2009
Yum!! What a quick, easy way to cook chicken breasts! This would be delicious with both boneless and bone-in breasts...or any cut of chicken really. The only change I made was to increase the amount of mayonnaise (I doubled it to counteract the spiciness of my Dijon mustard); I also marinated my breasts some of the Dijon mixture for about an hour before grilling - the end result was just delicious and we'll definitely make it again!

Yellow Squash Casserole

Reviewed: Aug. 17, 2009
I followed this recipe *almost* exactly - the only change I made was to remove the butter, both from inside the dish as well as on top. In my opinin, the butter was unnecessary because the eggs, milk and crackers gave this dish all the richness it needed. The end result was quite tasty (although my husband thought it was less so than I did). The only reason it didn't get 5 stars from me is that the crackers which I added to the squash turned out very mushy so the consistency was a little....off. If the texture of your food is an issue - you may want to avoid this, but the flavor was certainly good!

Lemon-Dijon Chicken

Reviewed: Jul. 28, 2009
I made this for dinner last night - and it was pretty good - but nothing spectacular. It's relatively impressive for a beginner, I may try it again, but will add a bit more Dijon.

15-Minute Dinner Nachos Supreme

Reviewed: Jul. 26, 2009
This was really good - and even better served with sour cream and nacho chips that I heated in the oven. I would have rated this 3.5 stars if I could have because hubs and I both felt that there was too much rice in this dish - so next time I will reduce the amount of rice and water by 1/2 cup each. After trying this again, I find that reducing the amount of rice and water makes this dish MUCH better - but you do need about 1 1/4 cups of water to the 1 cup of rice otherwise the mixture is a bit too tight.

Vegetable Chowder

Reviewed: Jul. 25, 2009
I made this for dinner the other night and served it with some homemade crusty bread. The end result was good, satisfying soup - but it was very basic, so I probably won't make it again (there are other recipes out there that are better, and just as easy to make).
