Just like all the other reviewers have said, saute the onions first. (I added minced garlic too). I have made this twice and the first time was better than the second. The first time I made it up the night before. The next day I took out of refrigerator & popped it in the oven (& added about 10 minutes to cooking time). The second time I prepared & baked right away. I think letting the flavors marinate overnight definitely helped make it more savory. Second time seemed a little bland. I don't think I did anything differently the 2nd time. My grocery store sells peeled cubed butternut squash as a real time saver!!!
