Due to the scarcity of current income that is one of the inevitabilities of life change, creating succulent food out of ...potentially non succulent ingredients is a challenge. However, my breakfasts have NOT suffered. Yesterday I was craving an omelette, so preparing myself for the raid of… MORE

This morning I awoke too early. Not the "Oh , I have to travel today" early at four AM, but rather that grumbly, instantly awake, "I'm going to need a nap at 3 PM" early. So, I'm sitting at my computer, sipping on Christmas, and remembering being 11, as I look at my mom's old candy… MORE

Ladies and Gents, What a huge and amazing last couple of months in my life. I've started a new job, quit a new job, moved to a new place, am returning to school, and cooking up a storm. I've opened a new business on Etsy, taught myself to knit, and just purchased a new violin. Amidst all of… MORE

Wow, what a difference a little while makes!   First of all, I want to say that I missed the community here! You all have such warmth and joy, and when I wasn't checking in every day, I felt the lack. The encouragement from all of you is such a special thing. :)So, I've been busy!  But first,… MORE

Ladies and gentlemen! I'm so sorry! I haven't even logged into AR in ages..and my dinners are suffering because of it. I'm currently posting from a break at work (night shifts are wonderful as a pool nurse) and will have some decent words tomorrow, I hope. :) I do have some new recipes to… MORE

Yesterday I went upstairs to find pork chops thawing on the counter instead of in water in the sink..but I got the hint, lol. They were still frozen so I wasn't too concerned. I was, however, SICK of pasta...and was going to make some mashed taters. The way I make chops though, doesn't really… MORE

I apologize for my silence of late. Work has started for me, and I am LOVING it!  Being a pool nurse is SO much fun. I love walking into a facility, and the charge nurse hands me books and a cart and says, "Your hall is that way, i'll give you report, and you can get started." !! Sink or … MORE

The impatience of the people for whom you cook often dictates your meal. Last night was no exception. I had my first day of Orientation for work (yay! i'm going to love it!)  and on the way home, I called Paul to see what we were going to do for food. His response was legendary.  "Well,… MORE

First of all, a note to those of you who read my blog about my poor bread. I felt so badly, but I simply had to throw it out. I let it rise...and rise....and RISE. Paul and I went to check on it: I wanted a second opinion. When I uncovered the bowl, and punched down the bread...oh dear… MORE

Twenty minutes ago, while watching "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes", I realized I was ten minutes late to punch down my dough. I dashed upstairs, looked at and smelled it..and it smelled very yeasty. I'm using the Angie's Perfect Rolls recipe from this site, and went back to double check… MORE

About Me
I'm a newly graduated nurse who is still trying to figure out what I want to do when I grow up. I grew up in Alaska, I love reading, gaming, cooking, eating, gardening, and pretty much ...everything? Except pimento loaf. I HATE pimento loaf. I congratulate anyone who can eat it. I love to travel, and I do so whenever I can. I've been to the Middle East, and every state in the US except for Hawaii. I wish there were a job...where I could read, cook, create, chatter away to people, and eat ...
My favorite things to cook
I love cooking anything that makes people happy to eat it: but my recent favorites are zuppa toscana, cinnamon rolls, and I'm excited to venture into creamy root vegetable soups...mmm...carrot and ginger.
My favorite family cooking traditions
I grew up in a Mennonite home, and my mother was Martha before Martha was Martha. SO. I grew up with homemade meals every night, and holiday feasting was really feasting, with huge family dinners, and huge family leftovers on huge family platters with not so friendly huge family games of scrabble or uno. I miss those days. My mom taught me everything I know, and she is still teaching me today. She is an invaluable encyclopedia of "what degree is this supposed to be at?" and "I whisk until the eggs look like WHAT?". I have learned through her to be horrifed at using processed ingredients "do you realize I could make that for 37 cents...why are you buying it?!", and that good food takes love, time, and the ability to recognize when what you're making has fallen...and start over.
My cooking triumphs
Zuppa Toscana, Cinnamon rolls, turkey at thanksgiving that was done WITHOUT the stuff inside it...>.>, Pork chops to die for, and home made candy...I was so surprised when I realized how easy caramel is!
My cooking tragedies
SO: I cannot cook Indian food. I tried. I failed...I will try again, but omg. SOMETHING goes wrong EVERY time. Turkey with the insides still in it. Turkey with ..."I'm supposed to thaw it first?!" ...and a chicken marinated in honey, dates, cilantro, and chili sauce. You'd think it was delicious. It SOUNDS delicious. It's not. At all. Just fyi.
