About 12 years ago I was searching online for a recipe I had lost in a move. I did a Google search and to my delight, it found my recipe in All Recipes. I originally found this cake recipe on the back of a C&H sugar bag back in the 70s. It's a cocoa apple cake and it's one of those unforgettable cakes with the perfect blend of apple, spice and chocolate flavors. Whenever I wanted to impress someone with a different cake that I knew would WOW them, I made this cake. I was so happy to have found the recipe again after it's 20 year absence from my recipe box.
11 years ago I met someone online. We had an immediate attraction. He was so charming and romanced me with poetry and daily phone calls. 6 months later we decided to meet for real. When he came out to California from NY to meet me in person, I planned a romantic weekend for the two of us that included a spa suite,  lots of candles and good food.  I knew I had to make this cake for him to win his heart anad his taste buds. : ) I baked some of the batter in a small heart shaped pan, for just the two of us.  The weekend went well and he fell in love with the cake...and me. hehe
A few months later he moved to CA to be with me. We were engaged and lived together for almost 7 yrs and every anniversary I made this cake for us to celebrate. He was a traveling RN and we had gone back east on a couple of assignments. I couldn't get used to the humidity and it made my asthma worse.  We moved back to CA and eventually we grew apart, as he missed his home and family back in NY.  I had my roots and family here so I knew I had to let him go. It was best for both of us and while the relationship didn't last, this cake will forever be one of my favorites. We have remained friends and still talk every couple of weeks on the phone. He still talks about that delicious heart shaped cake from when we first met. That weekend was the start many wonderful recipes I made for him and some great memories that we still share.
Cocoa Apple Cake I make mine with a cream cheese glaze.

Wow Lillydee, what an amazing story. Sorry to hear that your relationship didn't work out in the end, but your prince will come - maybe you should look closer to home? Some of the most amazing recipes my mother collected over the years came from such unassuming sources as you mentioned, on the side of a package of flour or sugar. Some of my new favorite recipes I've collected from tubs of strained yoghurt. Though I am married I am very curious to try out your cake on my family - maybe it will become the incentive I needed to encourage the younger members to clean their rooms and my hubby to finish his ongoing projects that tend to take over the living room!

Great story Lillydee. Sorry it didn't work out. But I'm glad that you have good memories. That cake looks really good!

About Me
I have been a baker and cake decorator for 39 years. A former bakery owner but now retired due to medical issues. I still make cakes & cupcakes for family and friends occasionally. These days I spend alot of time getting healthy, planning healthy meals and working out in a warm water therapy pool. I am now 178 lbs down from my highest weight.
My favorite things to cook
I love to make comfort foods, like my moms cabbage rolls, stuffed bell peppers, swiss steak, etc..but also try to make them healthier by using quinoa, brown rice, etc. Altho I don't bake as much as I once did, I love baking homemade cakes, cobblers, cookies, candy, etc.
My favorite family cooking traditions
Some of my recipes have been in my family for 50+ years and one for 100+ years...that would be my pop's pop corn balls and molasses taffy recipe. He grew up in Canada and his mother used to make the taffy and pull it on a hook in her kitchen. She then sold it to the local mercantile. Every fall we could hardly wait for a Saturday nite when we would invite friends over to make these. We would pop popcorn for hours and my pop would make several batches of the syrup. Mom would fill the huge bowl with popcorn and when the syrup was stirred in, we would all butter our hands and dip in cold water and make the popcorn balls. Sometimes we got burnt hands but it was all worth it in the end. The leftover syrup was poured on buttered plates and pulled into golden taffy. yummm
My cooking triumphs
I have made many beautiful wedding cakes and cakes in the shape of anything and everything. It was truly an honor to be a part of the bride & grooms special day. There is nothing like seeing the eyes of a child light up when they see their special birthday cake.. I once made a NASCAR car shaped cake for racer, Steve Sellers (Coca Cola car)
My cooking tragedies
Altho I only had a few cake catastrophies in the 39 yreas I have been making cakes...I was always able to make the necessary repairs in time for the event or wedding. I was always able to improvise when a florist didn't bring enough flowers to decorate the cake. Scouring yards for greenery and flowers can be challenging, but doable...Keeping a cool head can be an asset in those situations. : )
