After reading many of the reviews I also made some changes to this recipe. I used the ingredients as suggested by Sue, but put only the oil and 3 kernels in a pot, as suggested by many reviewers. While that was heating up, I "browned" my sugar in a small non-stick frying pan (melted it). Once the three kernels popped, I added the melted sugar (which does turn a little brown so don't be surprised) and the rest of the popcorn. Next time I might try brown sugar for a more caramelly flavour.
It turned out great, and none of it burnt.
