These were big, fluffy and delicious with maple syrup. I read a few reviews that said the batter was thin which was not the case for me. When mixing the wet ingredients I first mixed the buttermilk and soy milk(didn't have regular milk) then I added the melted butter, a little butter started to solidify since I am not patient enough to wait for all my ingredients to come to room temp but it didn't cause any problems. I was careful not to over mix and my batter was thick and chunky. If you like more flavor feel free to add whatever you want, this is a great base recipe. I'm not sure how other reviewers messed this up? Maybe not using buttermilk or over mixing?
