Somethin' Good

Thank you A.R. and all of you too!

The other day I blogged on "Waste Not Want Not", using up leftovers.  I again took inventory of what was in the refrig. to plan dinner, I had some pepperoni, some cheese, some cured olives, and tomatoes and herbs.  I was thinking "Oh guess it is pizza night again".  Then I logged on to A.R. and low and behold the recipe of the day "Pasta with Tomatoes and Basil", I have everything and then some, the pepperoni and the olives are not called for, I don't have enough feta and parmesan, but I do have some mozzarella wrapped in proscuitto (spelling?).  So I plan to morph the recipe and make an adapted version of this recipe for dinner.
Lately, I have read some pretty harsh criticism/comments  of A.R. from  some posting "users".  So on a positive note, I wanted to point out that this site brings me pleasure, entertainment, a sense of community and purpose every day.  It also educates me and as it is tonight, motivates me to stretch my imagination and budget.
Thanks to you and all you terrific bloggers for making my day a better day with you in it.

Don't know if we have seen the same stuff but in some cases what I saw was pretty darn harsh. I must say I agree with you, Covergirl, 100 percent! Where else would I have found several people to explain, in detail, how to use my lavendar blossoms in an AR recipe :)?

I just learned about "cooking" with edible flowers at my Whole Foods cooking classes. My fav. so far is the lavendar basil shortbread cookies. Thanks for your post, I worry that this nice site dedicated to pleasant pursuits is in jeopardy of turning into a forum for negative issues and problems that do not belong being aired in this venue. I cook and log in here to escape that stuff not to invite it if you know what I mean.

I'm seriously confused, haven't seen anything negative lately. Care to enlighten? I'm interested in that drive by a train wreck way.

Cover girl-I have learned so much from so many here on AR. I haven't done many reviews; however, I do like reading reviews that offer suggestions.

Raedwulf: Mostly on Recipe Buzz in this last week, some really unpleasant and/or inappropriate stuff. Many of us have noticed and objected.

Thank you covergirl for pointing out the positives of AR. That's the whole reason for being here!

covergirl I did hear about something that went on, but never got to see it since I don't read the Recipe Buzz very often.

It seems to me that some people, who I think are new to AR, are confusing us with Facebook and Twitter.People that seemingly have deep seated deep rooted problems in their lives, having little or nothing to do with food, looking for quick answers and remedies or relief from venting a lot of negative stuff. It is not about recipes or ingredients.

Whenever I see those seemingly irrational comments, I shrug them off. If the commenters were truly wanting to vent about AR they would not be posting comments but sending emails to AR for resolution. I know, they contend their emails don't get answered but are they telling the truth? I balance that with my own satisfaction with AR and make my own decision regarding their comment.

Oh my.. I missed those comments but I'm glad I did.. I agree with u covergirl.. This site has some fabulous people on it, people who have taught me so much & helped me through a few non food related issues too (due to dismal lack of real life friends) Baking nana immediately comes to mind.. I absolutely adore her! :) I love it on here. I just hope it doesn't continue to get any nastier..

covergirl, IMHO, no other recipe site has the same sense of community that AR does. For every "hater" there are at least a hundred really nice people who contribute. I'm glad you have generally positive things to say about AR, and I agree with you. It's important to remember that it is an open forum, and unfortunately there are creeps who do not care if they offend (indeed, it seems some INTEND to offend). I have also seen some instances where sensitive people have TAKEN offense where none was intended. AR peeps are a diverse bunch, with opinions all over the spectrum, and with cooking abilities from novice to professional. Like Forrest Gump's box of chocolates, you never know what you're going to get! In addition, sometime people find it hard to express exactly what they mean in writing. Facial expressions, tone of voice, and body language are all missing here. They make a huge difference in the meanings of words, and reading too quickly can also cause problems! So, I hope you will keep contributing to the Buzz, and I hope you will find some friends here. I know I have!

my best friend's mom makes $61/hour on the computer. She has been fired from work for 6 months but last month her pay was $21008 just working on the computer for a few hours. Go to this web site and read more NuttyRich.com

We have had a few meals like that ourselves; time to clean out the fridge before grocery shopping again kinda meals. My kids are will say "So, what are you gonna do with that, mom"? and after my heart sinks and the panic abates the kids are usually the ones that come up with ideas. PERFECT! Once they show inspiration and interest I know there won't be many complaints when we sit down to eat. I have even learned to seek out their "opinion"! Mmmhhhmmm - sneak, sneaky I know! :) Kitchen clean ups have been interesting to say the least!

Another thing, along those same lines, we do is "Shop the pantry". One of my boys is very interested in cooking; he is really good and pretty fearless in trying new things. I'll find him going through the pantry and freezer and he will ask me what I planned for dinner. I'll ask him "Why? Did you feel like something in particular"? He will and he'll say "No, I just saw you had 'XYZ' and lots of 'ABC' and I thought maybe I could make something with it"? I smile, loving it, all the while cringing at the fact of what the kitchen will look like when he is finished! LOL I think it is fun and very much like an episode of CHOPPED when you use what you have on hand... Necessary Creativity can be delicious!

Just adding my voice to the chior that loves AR. I too have learned tons and found a welcoming place to ask cooking questions, share what I know having made mistakes and would save another from my blunders. This weeks Cook of the Week are the AR subscribers - how neighborly is that!!

Nice job on the pasta! I like the ingredient search...it's a great way to find recipes to use up ingredients, and I'm a tweaker, too, so it usually works well for me. This is the #1 site I come to for recipes and for the sense of community. If I don't like something (like the sponsor blogs), I just don't read them, and it's all good. : ) Nice blog.

Me too, me too! I love seeing your buzzes and blogs and asking questions and trying to answer some. I love that we can go Off Topic and talk about other things and get to know each other a bit. It can be a crazy, mean world sometimes. This place is a port in the storm.

About Me
I am a retired registered nurse. I have two fabulous grandchildren ages 10 and 7, they live only 1 mile from me so we cook together often.
My favorite things to cook
I like one pot meals, slow cooker, rustic fare. Lately, I am cultivating recipes for soup and have turned out some really good results, especially using curry seasoning. I am not a baker.
My favorite family cooking traditions
I make many of my mother's dishes. I like to entertain with just a wide array of appetizers sometimes, even though it is labor intensive.
My cooking triumphs
My Italian spaghetti sauce. My famous pot roast made in an oven bag. Appetizers.
My cooking tragedies
My latest debacle is making Pho, Vietnamese beef soup. Very labor intensive, many exotic ingredients, cook all day. I went to strain it through a cheesecloth lined colander and forgot to put anything under the colander. Down the drain it went; 7 hours worth of broth. Oh Well!
