About this Cook
I am always up for trying something new - and I feel the same about cooking. I could count on my fingers the number of dishes I have every made more than once; if I cooked the same meals I would become extremely bored, and quickly. :) My cooking philosophy with kids: I have them; I make things they like; but.... "kid friendly" to me is not giving them hotdogs, mac and cheese, and peanut butter sandwiches. They eat as adults, but I respect that they have not acquired all of the same tastes that we have. Therefore, there are only a handful of ingredients that I avoid such as mushrooms or extremely hot spices; but I consider everything I make "kid friendly."
My favorite things to cook
Something new every night for me! I especially like to explore dishes from other cultures.
My favorite family cooking traditions
In South Africa I experienced a family "braai," which is their traditional barbeque in a lapa (hut-like shelter). If I could bring one family cooking tradition to the States, it would be a braai. Thinking about constructing a lapa one of these days.... :)
My cooking triumphs
When kids devour it and adults beg for the recipe.
My cooking tragedies
Burning an important broiled birthday turkey in the oven. :( BAD timing.

Pastel de Tres Leches (Three Milk Cake)
Of all the recipes on this site, use this one. It's perfectly moist - just follow the recipe exactly and you'll be fine. I let it completely cool in the fridge overnight, then put a layer of Cool Whip topping on and refrigerated it for a few hours again before serving. Next time I might try a 9x13 dish to see if it makes it even more moist. :)

Sun Dried Tomato and Pine Nut Stuffed Beef Tenderloin
I was very disappointed, considering the cost of this meal. :( It was dry, not as flavorful as I had hoped, and not worth the over-$100 I spent for a 5-lb. tenderloin and the stuffing. Next time I am sticking with a juicier crock pot recipe.

Fabada
The pros and cons.... The plus is that this is ALL protein, no carbs. The meat-loving half of our family really liked this one. It is also a good filling meal that won't leave you hungry after a few hours. The cons: first, this takes a lot of attention because as the beans get softer they begin to mush and stick on the bottom of the pan (it's a nice consistency when it's finished, but you have to stir every 10-15 minutes for the last 2-3 hours). Second, this is LOADED with fat. And third, it is quite costly. The taste was pretty good, and it is an interesting dish, but not worth the time.
