Best Hamburger Ever

Reviewed: Dec. 7, 2011
Very similar to the Ranch Burger, but instead it is the Onion Burger. It does taste a bit like meatloaf, but in my opinion, that's a good thing. I don't know what has happened to hamburger meat at the stores, but it just has almost no flavor anymore, so we have to add some flavor to it. I made a few changes to this recipe. I used bleu cheese instead of colby or jack cheese. I used 1/4 cup dry old fashioned oatmeal to make it a bit softer and moister. I also wanted to up the flavor a bit, but cut back on the salt, so I only used one fourth of a packet of onion soup mix, and to it I added 1/2 teaspoon dry curry powder (salt free), 1/2 teaspoon of Mrs. Dash seasoning (salt free), 1/4 teaspoon onion powder (salt free), 1/4 teaspoon ground celery seed (salt free), 1/4 teaspoon ground cayanne pepper, and 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper. I also added one heaping teaspoon of the finely minced garlic that comes in the little jars at the store (it's the garlic they use at most Chinese food restaurants). Wow! That was flavorful! Mix it all together with the finely chopped onion (I only used a small onion), oats and hamburger so that the seasoning is well distributed throughout. I left all the other ingredients the same. I think the dried oregano, basil, thyme, and rosemary made it so much better than I had even expected it to be. They are such savory spices.

Ranch Burgers

I don't know what has happened to hamburger meat at the stores, but it just has almost no flavor anymore, so we have to add some flavor to it. I made a few changes to this recipe. I don't like saltine crackers, so I used 1/4 cup dry old fashioned oatmeal. I also wanted to up the flavor a bit, but cut back on the salt, so I only used half of a packet of ranch dressing mix, and to it I added 1/2 teaspoon dry curry powder (salt free), 1/2 teaspoon of Mrs. Dash seasoning (salt free), 1/4 teaspoon onion powder (salt free), 1/4 teaspoon ground celery seed (salt free), 1/4 teaspoon ground cayanne pepper, and 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper. You have to be very careful when you turn these, or they will fall apart. Let them cook slowly on one side until they are done on that side and then just flip them once to other side to cook that side all the way through.

Good 100% Whole Wheat Bread

Reviewed: Oct. 9, 2011
I had to adjust the yeast down to 1/4 teaspoon, to keep it from falling in the middle of the loaf, since I use bread machine yeast. It makes a dense loaf of 100% whole wheat bread, so yes, this recipe does work, but I do believe that truly whole wheat bread is an acquired taste. I can see now why most people usually only use 1 cup of whole wheat flour and 2 cups of regular flour when they make "whole wheat" bread. This 100% whole wheat bread does not taste very good at all. In fact, after I use up my one sack of whole wheat flour I plan on going back to using nothing but regular flour for my bread machine bread from now on. If I'm going to go to all the trouble to make my own bread, I want it to taste yummy. I gave the recipe 3 stars because once you adjust the yeast to suit your needs, it actually does work. You will get a loaf of 100% whole wheat bread. It's just a shame that it doesn't taste very good. At least not to me. Everyone has different tastes, and some people may love this bread. I had my brother try some and he didn't like it either.
