About this Cook
I took "Home Eck" [LOL] in High School, started really liking to cook after taking that class. Once my partner & I decided to cook a recipe that had "cognac" as an ingredient, thinking we could have some 'snorts' @ school- It tasted so horrible we didn't pull it off~! But I got a job @ the local Golf course Club House & cooked, was a Waitress,Cashier, did "every-stuff" imaginable! I think I got paid $1.65 an hr. back then- [the mid 70's] The Boss Man tried to flirt inappropriately w/me & I quit! [He was a perv- or TRIED to be] Enuff said. Got a job @ a respectful resturant after leaving there.
My favorite things to cook
I really love to bake! Be it banana Nut Breads, cakes, lemon bars, etc. Also love to make Cassaroles, Mexican food, & sometimes very fancy gourmet foods- including various meat 'rubs' & balsamic fruit flavored vinegar reductions- Oh YuM!
My favorite family cooking traditions
I'd have to say my Mother's stuffing for Thanksgiving... She used Sour Dough bread/pork sausage/typical vegetables like onions, celery, garlic/parm. cheese & certain spices plus RAISINS! The smell that permeated throughout the house was sooo much a Turkey Day memory! Plus my Grandmothers Plum Pudding- w/hard sauce- Oh so decadently sweet & very British!
My cooking triumphs
I once made a braided bread that was very involved & hard to do! Then I won a recipe contest for a Whole Wheat Banana Nut Bread- while pregnant w/my 2nd child, my 1st born Son, Chad. They put me in the home town newspaper- gave me a silver bell & blue ribbon, and ALL becuz my competiton- "Zucchini Bread" didn't show up! I forget what the other contender was now, but was sure if that Zucchini bread showed up I would of lost! hahahaah!!!
My cooking tragedies
Once I decided to make Beef Jerky. Bought the flank steak, & made half of it Teriyaki flavor, the other half regular style. Did everything according to the recipe, cooked it for hrs. @ a very low temp. & towards the end it seemed as if it would take much longer- so I set the timer & went about cleaning house/taking care of my kids & Mother- Then when I went back to check on the Jerky, it was FULLY BURNT to a CRISP! I was devastated! Not to mention OUT a substantial amount of $$- Flank steak isn't or wasn't cheap! [Yeah, big "let down"] *Wahhh!* One day I'll make some again & will keep my eyes peeled on that oven!! *It's still embarrassing to talk about!*
