Irish Soda Bread

Reviewed: Mar. 24, 2010
Sweet enough, but not too sweet. Moist and dense, not dry and brittle. There may be a bit too much raisins - I just reduced the amount. It was a very delicious soda bread.

Sweet and Sour Pork III

Reviewed: Feb. 12, 2010
I followed the recipe as written with the exception of using a red pepper in place of a green. Green peppers are too bitter. I really like this recipe and I am one who ran away screaming from sweet and sour sauce with celery and peppers. It pairs really well with the pork and adds a lovely complexity. I highly recommend trying this recipe.

Grandmother's Buttermilk Cornbread

Reviewed: Oct. 25, 2009
This is a great recipe. The cornbread was moist, sweet (but not too sweet) and full of flavor. It also held together well - not crumbly at all. I didn't have buttermilk, but the commonly used substitute of milk and a Tbsp of lemon juice did the trick. I also baked it in a cast iron pot which let it brown nicely.

Best Chocolate Chip Cookies

Reviewed: Oct. 23, 2009
This is a reliable recipe. I often have issues with my chocolate chip cookies going flat and the flavor is sometimes a little off. Not with these. The texture is perfect, so is the flavor. I freeze whatever I don't need so whenever I'm craving some I can just pop a cookie in the oven. Thanks Dora, I won't be following the recipe on the Chocolate Chip packages anymore.

Apple Crisp II

Reviewed: Sep. 17, 2009
This is really good. Just as good as the boxed kind I use when I'm being lazy. It has a good crunch. The topping needed a dash of spice though, so I added a dash of clove, a dash of salt and a healthy sprinkling of cinnamon. I thought a cup of sugar on the apples was too much, but I was wrong. I also didn't add all the water, I just added a little. I can see where it would be needed as mine was kinda dry since I added the flour. Thanks for the recipe Diane, now I don't have to spend my money on the boxed mix.

Beth's Spicy Oatmeal Raisin Cookies

Reviewed: Dec. 7, 2008
This recipe is pretty good. A nice alternative to the ones my mom makes every year. I totally forgot to add the shortening in my first batch. They still came out yummy, though I thought the clove was a bit overpowering.

Mushroom Crescents

Reviewed: Nov. 16, 2008
These are pretty awesome. Taste like the Nancy's brand mushroom turnovers. I did add a splash of sherry. It's not a quick appetizer to make, but you can freeze the cresents (uncooked) and have an appetizer any time. Very savory and satisfying.

Kohlrabi with White Sauce

Reviewed: Oct. 13, 2008
I would have given this a higher rating if it wasn't for the white pepper. I should have realized before I added it to the sauce that it was too much. I don't really like my food spicy hot and even if I did, the amount of pepper is overwhelming. That's all I tasted. I'm going to make this again, but this time, just a dash of the pepper. The sauce did have a lovely creamy flavor/texture that complemented the kohlrabi.

French Onion Soup Gratinee

Reviewed: Jul. 14, 2006
My husband and friends liked it alot. I think next time though I'll use more beef broth than chicken. It wasn't beefy enough for me. I also have a suggestion for those with kids or not enough oven safe bowls. After broiling the bread, broil the cheese on top of it. You can then set the cheesy bread in the bowls full of soup (cut it up for the kids). The presentation isn't the same, but it is just as delicious.
