Black Magic Cake

Reviewed: Aug. 17, 2012
I personally give this 4 stars (meaning i liked it but wouldnt make it again) but many in my family give it 5 stars (loved it and want it again). They say it's like the cake of a Suzy-Q. So I've made it multiple times. I frost this with vanilla buttercream. So there you have it . . . hope this review helps.

Mexican Potato Nachos

Reviewed: Aug. 15, 2012
I made these for my 11 year old because he likes all foods with a south west flair. I tweaked a bit because I wanted to use what I had in the pantry. Instead of baked potatoes, I used 2.5lbs red potatoes that I cooked in the microwave then sliced and spread onto baking sheet. I seasoned the meat/bean mixture using homemade taco seasoning (Recipe from this site). I used shredded cheddar montrey jack blend. My son really enjoyed these. I think they would have tasted even better with baked potatoes but I needed to use the potatoes I had on-hand. Thank you lois for the recipe.:)

Sweet & Savory Chocolate Marshmallow Meltaways with Himalayan Sea Salt

Reviewed: Aug. 15, 2012
I made these for *Recipe Group.* Since today is Valentines Day I tweaked the recipe using pink marshmallows and Himalayan pink sea salt crystals. I rolled the cookie dough between parchment paper to about 1/4 inch thick. I cut the dough with a 1 3/4" round cookie cutter. I baked the cookies for 5 mins at 350F and then placed 1 pink star shaped marshmallow (leftover from Christmas marshmallows) on each cookie and baked for an additional 2 mins. After the cookie/marshmallow cooled I piped some frosting on in a grid pattern. Then I drizzled some melted semisweet chocolate on in the same grid pattern. Before the chocolate and frosting set I sprinkled each cookie with Himalayan pink sea salt crystals. These treats taste good. The cookies do melt-in-your-mouth. The smaller marshmallows are add marshmallow flavor without being overpoweringly marshmallowy (as a bigger marshmallow would be). The piped sweet chocolate and frosting pair nicely with the sea salt flavor. The tweaks I made were according to our tastes since marshmallow treats ate not our favorite. The salt adds texture and flavor. My DS said these were great. I think they are good. Thank you Joanna for a sweet recipe.

Penne with Chicken and Pesto

Reviewed: Jul. 31, 2012
We enjoyed this pesto pasta dish for dinner. I followed the sprit of the recipe but did make changes to suit my family amd the ingredients I had on hand. I used 2lbs of bnls/sknl chicken breast, 1/2lb whole wheat penne, 1c heavy cream, 6T basil walnut pesto (homemade-- recipe from AR), two handfuls pecorino Romano, 4c steamed blanched broccoli florettes, 10 Sundried tomatoes reconstituted and cut into thin strips. My family really enjoyed this meal and the littlest geek said that I could make it again (before he even finished his dinner-- he's planning ahead!) Thank you MARYSTEVE for the inspiring recipe! :)

Shanghai Noodle Salad

Reviewed: Jul. 30, 2012
This salad is very good. I doubled the sauce recipe. I omitted the salt since salt in addition to soy sauce seemed excessive. I subbed sriracha sauce for crushed red pepper. Will make again. Thanks tyansia :)

Smooth Sweet Tea

Reviewed: Jul. 26, 2012
I make this often. The first time I mde it I sweetened it using 50/50 Splenda and sugar. Subsequently, I make it with much less sugar or sweetener. I make a double batch using 4c. boiling water, 16 tea bags, 2 pinches baking soda and 1/4c. splenda. Stays clear and doesn't get bitter. Thanks cookincode3 for the recipe. :)

Basil Pecan Pesto

Reviewed: Jul. 26, 2012
I made this for dinner tonight. Used pecans fresh from Georgia and basil freshly harvested from my garden. Followed the proportions of the recipe exactly. I didn't have parmesian cheese so I subbed pecorino romano and it worked out fine. The recipe is silent as to which kind of olive oil to use-- I decided not to use EVOO in favor of lighter olive oil. This pesto has a lovely delicate flavor that my family enjoyed served with crispy gnocchi. Glad to have a delicious affordable alternative to pinenuts. Thank you grettagirl for the delicious recipe.

Deli-cious Potato Salad

Reviewed: Jul. 22, 2012
I made this deli-cious potato salad for my family. We enjoyed the unique ingredients. In particular the use of pickles instead of the usual celery is very good. We also enjoyed the sweetness of the apples in contrast with the tartness of the vinegar. The salami is a good addition; I used sliced Genoa salami strips as I had deli sliced Genoa salami in the fridge. Also, I used red potatoes with the skin on. Thank you ibbz for sharing your recipe. I am not a big fan of making potato salad because it is a lot of work but I would make this again because it is delicious and certainly worth the time and effort. :)

Easy Mint Chocolate Chip Ice Cream

Reviewed: Jun. 30, 2012
I've made this several times. It comes out great. Sometimes I sub whole milk or half-and-half for the 2% milk, I store the mini chocolate chips in the fridge so they are ready for ice cream. My other change is increasing the mint extract to 1.5 tsp. Thank you Darryn for the recipe.

I found this recipe in Lightedway's recipe box. I love rosted red peppers and all the ingredients so I decided to put it on my to-do list. I used homemade ranch dressing mix (Scotdog's recipe). This dip is delicious! It's going onto my list of favorite dips. Thanks for the great recipe, Cindy! :)

Homemade Laundry Soap

Reviewed: May 20, 2012
I tried making this in the past with a recipe from the Internet but I didn't use washing soda so my results weren't great. Baking Nana's help with getting the right ingredients is very much appreciated. Also, 1 bar soap equals 2 cups grated. I grated soap with my FP The first time I made this recipe. The second time I had my 11yo hand grate it. I now have a dedicated FP for soap which is great because it takes a bit of work to get soap residue off the FP bowl. Thnks Baking Nana for helping me to get this recipe right. :)

Old Fashioned Vanilla Ice Pops (a.k.a. Pop Pops)

Reviewed: Apr. 16, 2012
I made this delightful frozen snack using locally brewed "Creme Soda" which is light brown; hence the brownish colored pops. The bottled soda pop is 12oz so I adjusted the recipe quantities accordingly: 12oz soda, 1c. water, 1/4c. sugar (I used Splenda granular) and 1/8+ tsp. vanilla. I made 4 popscicles and 1 tray of pop cubes. The pops taste wonderful and refreshing. I plan to make a second batch using orange soda and orange extract since my DS loves orange soda. Thank you SHORECOOK for the fun recipe!

Mocha Cupcakes ~ A Mocha (Coffee-Chocolate) Version of "Sweet Vanilla Cupcakes"

Reviewed: Apr. 15, 2012
These are very good cupcakes. The flavor is mocha. I haven't perfected a pure chocolate flavor (maybe i should have named them "mocha cupcakes") that I set out for but I am very pleased with the mocha flavor. Try it with or without the 1/2 tsp instant coffee and see what you prefer. Would love to hear about your "tweaks.". Post them in reviews or let me know @The Buzz.

I needed this to be crusting buttercream so I made it with shortening subbed for half the butter and i used a few ounces of heavy cream instead of milk. Tastes great, rich and fudgey. Will make this again. Thanks Amy for the recipe.
