i have made this recipe exactly as listed and it was fantastic! However, I also made it without the vanilla and the sugar and it is still pretty great, and healthier! Plus I usually make this at work and don't have vanilla on me.
A few notes: it is important to use the frozen strawberries or even frozen bananas. This makes it colder, the proper temperature.
If you do not like the consistency of oatmeal, grind it up before hand.
You can substitute pretty much any fruits in here, but I'd leave the banana in. Keep in mind, the other fruits won't taste as strong as the strawberry.
