Pretty much finished up canning vegetables now.  We only live about 1.5 hours away from the amazing Kickapoo Apple Orchards near Gays Mills Wisconsin.  Made a trip there this past Sunday. Result:    12 quarts of apple/cranberry/raspberry sauce created on Monday.   Used 1 peck of Jonomac, 1… MORE

About this Cook
I am Mom to 4, Grandma to 11. Full time cosmetologist. Live on the family farm. Love all aspects of cooking and do a lot of it. Food preservation is important to me and do much experimenting with that. We grow much of our own food. Other hobbies include photography and digital scrapbooking. Have been a league bowler for over 40 years. Spending time with and cooking for family and friends is a large part of our life. Always looking for new ideas and recipes.
My favorite things to cook
Bread baking is one of my specialties. My Mother was a bread baker all 91 years of her life. I watched and learned much from her cooking and baking talents. All homemade from scratch, including the growing and preserving of our own food. We still do most of our own butchering and meat processing also. During our farming years, we raised all of our meat. I still make all of my own beef and chicken stock.
My favorite family cooking traditions
Most of our children and grandchildren live within an hour of us. Many Sundays include extended family dinners. I love entrees that can be prepared ahead and cooked right before serving. Fall and winter brings on many soup dinners along with a fresh loaf of crusty bread. Often followed by dessert of ice cream and a baked treat.
My cooking triumphs
For extended family get togethers, my husband's family seems to look toward me to organize the meals for our Christmas and Fall get togethers. I will usually plan the menu and prepare the main course. The rest of the meal will then be pot luck. I also help with our church's fall soup supper by preparing a couple of roasters of homemade ham and bean soup.
My cooking tragedies
There have been many. I am always on the look out for new recipe ideas. Many turn out great, but there are times when I think my experience provides a faster, more efficient way of preparing them...and as usual, if you don't follow directions, failure occurs :) I also have learned that it usually does not work to double recipes...better to make it twice instead of making double at one time.

Homemade Yogurt
I made this exactly as recipe states. I used my electric oven overnight with the light on, and it turned out wonderful! Will definately use this recipe often.

No-Guilt Zesty Ranch Dip
I made this recipe according to directions without alterations. Absolutely perfect as is. I believe this will become a staple in my fridge. This would be wonderful on baked potatoes, or even as a chowder soup base. The taste is almost addictive. At first glance, the recipe looks complicated because of so many ingredients. However it only took about 10 minutes to prepare and most of the ingredients would be in any good cook's kitchen. If possible, I would give this 10 stars.

Squash Braid
I made this without altering the recipe at all. This is probably one of the best bread recipes I have ever used. The dough is so soft and nice to handle. The texture of the bread is beautiful and the taste....well, you just want to keep eating it. Definately a 5 star recipe!
