The Best Banana Bread

Reviewed: Dec. 26, 2014
The first time I made this recipe, I did so because it was easily halved and I seldom have enough bananas for the whole portion. When I make a half recipe I use a smaller loaf pan that I inherited from my mother. Now I make it just because it's easy and so good. Next time I'm going to add some nuts to it, pecans or walnuts, whichever is in the pantry. Never throw away overripe bananas again.

Mayonnaise Biscuits

Reviewed: Sep. 15, 2014
You don't expect something this easy to be this good. I've had self-rising flour on hand from a previous recipe and this gives me a chance to use it up. I made these exactly as written and they were wonderful.

Negroni Cocktail I

Reviewed: Dec. 25, 2013
I drink this cocktail frequently, especially during the Summer months. The Compari is a bit sour for me, so I always add a dash of orange juice.

Vinegar Cookies

Reviewed: Jul. 25, 2011
I was looking for a recipe that didn't require me to leave the house for missing ingredients. Substituted Splenda for the sugar and they were terrific!

Ultimate Chocolate Dessert

Reviewed: Feb. 14, 2015
My husband just told me this may be the best dessert I've ever served him. I agree. It was decadent and very easy to prepare. I made it exactly as written, using 70% cocoa. There are a number of variations I might try another time. I think some Cayenne would be a nice touch or a splash of a liquor such as Grand Marnier, Kahlua or Chambord might be nice. Another touch of individuality would be the dish you use. I had four little Chinese tea cups and they were the perfect size. You could also use a stemmed liquor glass or come up with an idea of your own. Play with it. My next dinner party will certainly include this divine dessert.

Apple Cinnamon Oatmeal

Reviewed: Feb. 2, 2015
It was a perfect breakfast for a couple snowed in for the day. My husband has never had "real" oatmeal, just the instant kind, but he loved this. I used more apple juice and less water, and otherwise prepared it exactly as written.

Red Cabbage

Reviewed: Jan. 31, 2015
This tasted very authentically German, served with roast tenderloin of pork. Here's a tip that came in handy: I only had whole cloves, but they ground to a perfect texture using my little coffee bean grinder. I omitted the apples because I didn't have any on hand, but added some apple sauce instead and I think it was an acceptable substitute.

Oatmeal Raisin Cookies VI

Reviewed: Sep. 17, 2014
I was married for ten years before I found out that Oatmeal Raisin Cookies were my husband's favorite. I made a half batch last week to test the recipe and a whole batch this morning, so we could share with the neighbors. I did add a teaspoon of salt to the sifted flour this time with a marked improvement in taste. I also flattened each cookie with a fork just a little bit before baking. This technique made for a more uniform shape. I used a cookie scoop and it made exactly four dozen cookies.

Cream Cheese Squares

Reviewed: Jul. 28, 2014
This is absolutely delicious and easier than something this good should be. A dollop of ice cream or whipped cream is a nice addition, but it stands alone perfectly well.

Fluffy Pancakes

Reviewed: May 7, 2014
I've been cooking for over fifty years and these are the best pancakes I've ever had at home or anywhere else for that matter. Follow the recipe exactly and you won't be disappointed. This recipe makes around eight "saucer" sized cakes, perfect for two people.

Balsamic Roasted Pork Loin

Reviewed: Mar. 12, 2014
I prepared this almost exactly as written and it was fabulous! My husband had his doubts because he didn't care for the odor in the house, but he raved about the finished product. I put thickly sliced onions on the bottom and basted it several times. Next time I'll try the garlic suggested by others, but this recipe doesn't need to be fiddled with much to be outstanding. Baked beans are a nice side dish.
