I work from home as the managing editor/design editor for a city magazine (www.qcmag.com). Since I'm home all day, my wife thinks I should have the meals planned out and ready to go. I'm working!
My favorite things to cook
I enjoy using recipes, but I also love to create. I enjoy the feeling knowing I made a tasty dish using what I had on hand and not looking at a piece of paper for each step.
My favorite family cooking traditions
I will always remember the smells of walking into my grandmothers house. My grandfather, who died before I was born, was a butcher, so meat was always a big deal in that house. Despite all of our best efforts, we have never been able to duplicate her pot roast. To this day, I still seek out the wisdom of a good butcher ... a teen in the meat dept. of a mega chain just doesn't cut it.
My cooking triumphs
I have a recipe I'm working on for Jalapeno Peanut Butter Cookies with Chipotle Mocha Frosting. I also have a recipe I call Godzilla Sushi ... little slices of jalapeno filled with a cream cheese and crab meat mixture.
My cooking tragedies
Way too many to count. You have to mess up many times to claim a few victories.

Chicken Vegetable Barley Soup
Very delicious soup! The toasted slivered almonds are an amazing touch. My dad had 4 bowls, and he's not what I would call a fan of healthy food. He requested more barley and less potatoes. Like most people, I made my own adjustments. I hate mushrooms, so they didn't make the cut. Also, I used half no salt added chicken stock and half no salt vegetable stock. Next time, I will add some fresh herbs during cooking to compensate for the lack of salt. Still a 5-star recipe because I know that my alterations changed the outcome of the recipe. This is a keeper! Truly a wonderful, hearty (and healthy!) soup perfect for a chilly night.

Marshmallow Fondant
First time out the gate making fondant of any kind. I used the kitchen aid mixer for all but the last cup of powdered sugar, kneaded the rest and it worked perfect. I made it the day I used it and chilled in in the freezer for a couple hours and had no issues working with it after that. The kids loved the flavor and my wife is impressed with the cake I made.

My Amish Friend's Caramel Corn
Simply the best. Not one thing needs changing. Possibly the best recipe I've ever found on Allrecipes.
