About this Cook
Ive loved being in the kitchen all my life. I remember the first thing I made was a Wacky cake, and I was so excited I couldn't wait to get in the kitchen and get started. Its been a love affair ever since.
My favorite things to cook
Everything edible. It depends on the mood and the craving. I do love making two crust fruit pies with tender, flaky crust. It's a lost art,and reminds me of my mother's cooking. I love making things that other people think are hard to make. I also love making simple foods or food that is fabulous from ingredients that you would never imagine using like Chicken Divan from frozen broccoli, canned chicken, cream of chicken soup, pre-made mayonaise, re-constituted lemon juice and pre-ground spice. It tastes like it took all day and made the kitchen a wreck.
My favorite family cooking traditions
Appalachian gourmet. Depression era foods from hill billies. Home grown, home preserved, home baked from local products with influence from Pennsylvania Dutch, German, Italian and the Eastern European countries.
My cooking triumphs
I make wonderful Hollandaise Sauce without even thinking about it. When I was living in Sweden in an international apartment complex I invited several people over from different countries a few evenings after a group from Italy had invited them over and they all said that my Italian cuisine was much better than that which the actual Italians had made.
My cooking tragedies
I've had a few things turn out bad, and when it's bad, it's really bad. Oh and once I got drunk while decorating a wedding cake and went out on my own and got real "creative" with it. It was hideous. Bright, gaudy colors that were nothing close to the bride's theme. It was a tragedy. I ruined the poor girls wedding. I don't drink much anymore, and not when I'm cooking for other.......

King Ranch Chicken Casserole I
This is a fantastic recipe, but don't discount it as a dip! Mix all of the "liquid" ingredients together and heat or keep warm in a crockpot and serve with tortilla chips to dip. Way better than Buffalo Chicken Dip!

Juicy Thanksgiving Turkey
I cooked a 20 # bird and the legs were falling off in 4 hours, but the breast was still moist. I didn't do the whole line the pan with foil and wrap it up around, I simply covered the pan tightly with foil. It would probably work with one of the old fashioned granite roasters too! Will definitely be cooking all my turkeys this way now!

Butter Soup
This is a great recipe! Here in PA Dutch country you often find cut up hot dogs in the soup too. The noodles are not spaetzel as one review stated though, they are actually revels - another German type of noodle. Spaetzel are lighter in texture and cook more quickly, usually pushed through a sieve into the hot liquid.

Pile it into a tomato half, load it into a wrap, or spread it on bread. Chicken salad does it all.
