Guess what? I received my first request for an answer to a question from my blog today, so I thought I would share it with every one.
This goes out to Nancy, her question is "what is the best type of shrimp to buy for recipes when you go to the store. I live in the Midwest and find that there is no such thing as fresh?"
Well Nancy, I am going to give you an answer based on what I do. Some may disagree with me, but you did ask me after all and everyone else is welcome to chime in with their recommendations as well.
1. Never buy Shrimp that is already peeled and deveined, buy raw shell on shrimp when ever possible.
2. I never buy farm Raised--only wild caught shrimp!
3. If possible look for wild caught shrimp that says Texas Gulf Coast if possible, they are generally White Shrimp, and higher than the other types you can buy.
With that being said, I am sure that many will have a different take on the best area to make sure you shrimp is from, but I will stick to the gulf coast. no matter where they originate, always buy shell-on raw shrimp that is wild caught and you will definitely
tell the difference.
