Chef John's Turkey Sloppy Joes

Reviewed: Apr. 8, 2013
It's obvious that this recipe was designed by a chef. The combination of ingredients, even the seemingly unconventional ones such as cocoa powder, make this recipe sing. The sweet, almost exotic flavor make it a very interesting recipe. That it's made from ground turkey and as such, presents a healthier eating option, is purely a bonus.

Quick Cheddar Garlic Biscuits

Reviewed: Apr. 7, 2013
Simple, but wonderful. I have made other versions of this recipe and have learned through experience that I prefer the thicker version of shredded cheese; it provides a cheesier taste explosion with each bite, and that's a good thing.

Citrus Chicken Stir Fry

Reviewed: Jan. 31, 2013
This recipe is named appropriately. Without telling my wife the kind of stir-fry I had prepared, she commented about the citrus-like flavor. The flavor is rich without being too overwhelming. I enjoyed the richness of the tamari sauce. I thought I had peanut oil when I started but did not, so I used sesame oil to brown the chicken. I also lightly drizzled some sesame oil on the pasta too, which my wife also enjoyed. All in all, a nice stir-fry recipe when you don't want the same, bland stir-fry.

Six Can Chicken Tortilla Soup

Reviewed: Jan. 29, 2013
This is a simple, easy, tasty soup recipe, which requires little time or effort. Still, it offers a sophisticated, wonderful taste, which doesn't really need any embellishment. I have several other similar allrecipe recipes in my recipe box, but this one is--by far--the easiest to prepare.

Pork Loin and Cabbage

Reviewed: Jan. 28, 2013
We love this recipe! The flavor of the cabbage compliments the pork very well. In fact, we had a hard time deciding if the meat or the cabbage tasted better. Together, they are awesome. It may seem that a full head of cabbage takes a long time to reduce, but with patience it will; just stay with it. This is a simple, somewhat healthy, tasty recipe. What more could a cook want?

Asiago Toasted Cheese Puffs

Reviewed: Dec. 25, 2012
Really, really good. I like this recipe as an alternative to my tried and true garlic bread. In terms of volume, I ended up with exactly enough spread. If you wish to spread more bread with the mixture, you will definitely need to increase the mixture, because you will probably not have any extra. The herbs are strong, which we love, but if you like your herbs to be a little more subtle, obviously scale back appropriately. We used freshly grated Asiago, which is definitely worth the time and effort.

Oatmeal Dried Fruit Cookies

Reviewed: Dec. 19, 2012
I had some dried cherries to get rid of and this oatmeal cookie recipe was just the ticket. I realized that our home did not have any cookies to leave for Santa and I could not let that happen. Ho! Ho! Ho! Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow. This is one moist, tasty, cookie recipe.

Tangerine Cherry Cranberry Sauce

Reviewed: Nov. 22, 2012
I am not a huge fan of cloves, but this is still pretty excellent. It allowed me to use up some dried cherries I had on hand. I was looking for a new twist on the standard cranberry sauce in a can, and this recipe did the trick. It's a little labor intensive, but worth the time. It's a good side dish to bring if it's a potluck type gathering, but if you are trying to cook the rest of a big meal, may be a little too distracting (though you could make it ahead since it will keep in the refrigerator for awhile).

Perfect Pulled Pork

Reviewed: Nov. 4, 2012
I cooked the five plus pound pork shoulder roast on high for four hours. It was close to done, but did not have the fall-off-the-bone characteristic that I was aiming for. I'll cook it slower and longer next time. I combined the pork with Bubba's BBQ Sauce on the allrecipes website and it was great!

Superb Sauteed Mushrooms

Reviewed: Nov. 1, 2012
My wife and me loved this mushroom recipe, which we used to garnish our NY Strip steaks. The red cooking wine provides an interesting, exotic flavor, which meshes well with the other ingredients. It's nearly perfect and I plan to use this recipe as my default sauteed mushrooms recipe, unless I get the itch to try another recipe.

Slow Cooker Chicken Taco Soup

Reviewed: Sep. 30, 2012
I used hot chili beans, which boosted the spice factor in this already spicy soup. It was a little too spicy for my wife, but we both enjoyed it. I'll just need to remember not to add anything spicy to it the next time I prepare it. I used pre-cooked naked, grilled chicken tenders from Costco and sliced them diagonally and cooked it on my stove top. It turned out great.

I found this recipe in a pinch when I didn't have time to run to the store for taco seasoning. Very good.

Dad's Simple Steak Marinade

Reviewed: Aug. 19, 2012
I used olive oil for a little bit of a healthier twist. There are better marinades on this website, but this one was fine. It helped tenderize the sirloin steaks my wife purchased. It has all of the elements for a successful marinade, but nothing that makes it stand out over and above the standard marinade. Good though.

Smoky Grilled Pork Chops

Reviewed: Aug. 10, 2012
Reviewer Spunky Buddy is right; mixing the wet and dry ingredients together results in a paste that does not adhere to the pork chops. It would have worked much better to splash the wet ingredients on the pork, then use the spices like a rub. I added a little olive oil to the "paste" and it helped a little, but most of the mixture fell off. That noted, enough of the mixture stayed on the meat to provide a great flavor. It was excellent, but could have been even better, had the mixture adhered to the meat better.

Jim's Perfect Steak Marinade

Reviewed: Jul. 15, 2012
This marinade is fine and will do the job, but there are plenty of others on this website that are much better. It's better than no marinade, but not in the top tier.

Wedge Salad with Elegant Blue Cheese Dressing

Reviewed: Jul. 15, 2012
This one is a winner. The volume of dressing is fairly small. Our family of three used almost all of the dressing on our salads. If you like to have enough to to use the dressing again, double the dressing ingredients. Like others, I sprinkled half of the blue cheese on our salads. Do note that this will make the dressing itself a little less thick. That was fine with us. It was delicious.

Sweet and Sour Pork Chops

Reviewed: Jun. 23, 2012
Oh, baby! Great stuff. One thing that hasn't been mentioned is that as written, the volume of the sauce is pretty sparse. Next time, I will double the ingredients that make up the sauce. I brushed the chops with the sauce and grilled them. Meanwhile, I heated the sauce and when done grilling, lathered it all over the chops. If you brush the chops, set some sauce aside for brushing so the raw pork doesn't contaminate the sauce. If you boil the sauce, that will accomplish the same thing. Like others, I prepared rice with this dish, using some Cajun seasoning and some garlic powder to kick the rice up a notch and to bring it into harmony with the chops. I also chopped tiny pieces of one chop and put it in the rice for more substance.

Elegant Orzo with Wilted Spinach and Pine Nuts

Reviewed: Jun. 3, 2012
What a great side dish, particularly if you are looking for something a little different. As another reviewer noted, without the balsamic vinegar (and I would add the feta cheese and tomatoes), all of which are added at the end, this would be a very bland dish (albeit quite attractive looking). But with the vinegar, cheese, and tomatoes, the side dish really takes off. The recipe is also much easier to prepare than one might assume when viewing the list of ingredients. Excellent.

Cream of Broccoli Soup II

Reviewed: Jun. 3, 2012
This soup turned out thinner than I expected, but had a great flavor. In retrospect, it was a little too salty. Next time, I will add salt incrementally instead of blindly following the recipe. I blanched the broccoli, which turned out great. I boiled the florets for two minutes, then placed them in a bowl filled with ice water. My family enjoyed this soup, though we prefer it to be thicker. If you also like a thicker soup, just add additional cornstarch.
