I began cooking & baking at age 8 for 4-H and to enter baked goods in other local fairs. The kitchen brings back such great memories--and is a great place to make memories with my children.
My favorite things to cook
I head to Allrecipes for a good hearty supper recipe--and am always distracted by those tempting dessert recipes! Needless to say, I find myself in the kitchen making more sweets that necessary--Allrecipes has such a great selection.
My favorite family cooking traditions
Baking goods for the Sandwich Fair (in Sandwich, IL) and Thanksgiving! All four grandchildren have gathered in my mom's kitchen and prepared the entire meal together (ages 7,9,11,13)for the past three years.
My cooking triumphs
Yes, in this day and age, this is a triumph: Preparing at least 4 home-cooked meals during a 7 day week (that's filled with a plethora of family activities!).
My cooking tragedies
When I was 8 years-old I proudly made and decorated a cake for my birthday (that's when you could still take home-baked good as Bday treats for your classmates!) I always had to take the bus to school because my parents went early to work. It was in one of those metal cake pans with a sliding metal lid--so I was safe, right? Well, my cake made it to the bus stop and through the 35 minute bus ride--however, as I stepped off the bus at school, I missed the last step...yep, it landed upside-down on the walkway right in front of the school. No one got to enjoy its flavor, but at least I have pictures of it from the night before! Good memories now--but at the time it was a tragedy for an 8 year-old! :)
