Great-Grandmother born in Kentucky and have lived in several states but feel like a Southerner
My favorite things to cook
Slow cooking soups to freeze now that I'm not a spring chicken and don't like standing at stove and sink for long periods of time.
My favorite family cooking traditions
Bacon, eggs, biscuits, milk gravy and grits for breakfast. Two-crust blackberry cobblers. chicken fried in lard with mashed potatoes and milk gravy. turkey with cornbread dressing. Cornbread at dinner (lunch to Yankees) and supper (dinner to Yankees) beans, potatoes and home canned pickles on table every day no matter what else on table. Home canned limed pickles. Deep-fried everything Daddy shot or fished. Crumbled cornbread in buttermilk. All frying done in large very old aged black iron skillet. Drinking custard. Vegetables and fruit in season. No vegetable cooked with healthy crunch or beans that rattled in plate. Sorgum and butter on plate and hot biscuits reeled around sogging it up. Home canned blackberries, green beans, peaches, tomatoes, and purple hulled peas.
My cooking triumphs
Very large blackberry and peach cobblers to feed a crowd. People liked most everything I cooked.
My cooking tragedies
Dropped the first turkey I baked as a young bride onto the floor. Guest who helped me get it back on plate looked at me and said, "I won't tell if you don't"
