Glazed Meatloaf I

Reviewed: Feb. 25, 2008
this is a good, simple recipe. in my opinion, you really must flavor the meat more than listed. i added salt, pepper, garlic, some A1. i thought there was plenty of sauce. my five-year-old, traditionally one of the most picky of pre-schoolers, ate a whole piece without being nagged at all. ***** i had to go back and give 5 stars instead of 4. i've made this several times now, and although i still think the meat needs to be seasoned more first, my son and husband love it and eat it all almost the first night -- few leftovers. it has become a family staple. you can't beat that.

Basil Shrimp

Reviewed: Jun. 30, 2006
simple and flavorful. i got compliments all around. hint: don't leave the shrimp in the fridge for longer than an hour. also, i used dijon mustard instead of plain brown.

Spinach Dip with Water Chestnuts

Reviewed: Jan. 23, 2008
we used very sweet onions and lactose-free sour cream (but no one noticed the change in sour cream). also, i only used one 8-oz container of sour cream, and i REALLY recommend not using 16 ounces. that would have been way too much. it went over very, very well at a recent dinner party. i put it all in a rosemary-sourdough bread bowl. we had very little left!

Cashew Crusted Chicken

Reviewed: Jan. 23, 2008
i used an apricot-ginger preserve for this dish; i doubled the whole recipe and let the chicken sit in the sauce for a hour or so before cooking it all together. i made this for a large dinner party at my parents house, and it was a raging success. thanks for the great recipe!

Bake Sale Lemon Bars

Reviewed: Jan. 9, 2008
like others, i was tempted to rate this with less stars simply because the recipe as-is is not what we're all making. but with suggestions, these are wonderful. PLEASE follow the suggestions of both gourmetmommy AND beebeebaker. the crust is very good, but there should be more of it. the taste of the filling, after following advice, is wonderful. i used all the juice from one lemon and the rest of my bottled lemon juice, which left me just shy of a cup, so i also added the zest of the lemon. it was really perfect. i think i whipped the filling too long, though (i was on the phone :) )so it looked very foamy when finished. but who cares! they were great. even my ultra-picky husband loved them. once upon a time, we both worked at starbucks and loved to have a cup of coffee with a lemon bar. nice to know i don't have to pay so much to have the same treat at home.

Best Chocolate Chip Cookies

Reviewed: Jan. 9, 2008
i wanted a recipe that would be the other side of the coin to the "award winning" cookies from this site, which i make often; something thinner and crispier with less vanilla taste. these were perfect -- and my 5 year old did all the mixing, i just put out the ingrediants. i can't imagine anyone thinking they were tasteless or cakelike. we followed the recipe exactly, except we used mini-chips, which really work better with a thinner cookie. my husband is a very picky eater, especially when it comes to sweets. he loved these more than any other chocolate chip cookies recipe.

Clone of a Cinnabon

Reviewed: Dec. 22, 2007
my husband hates sweets, but for some reason he has been on a cinnamon bun kick. so i told him about this recipe and he insisted i make it. another satisfied review -- these are delicious. i have no idea why you should turn them over after baking as someone suggested; it's not necesssary. next time i might put some finely chopped walnuts or pecans in with the cinnamon/sugar mix. the icing was the only thing my husband rated "not quite perfect" but it didn't stop us from eating them up!

Baker's Secret Pie Crust

Reviewed: Jul. 30, 2006
my food processor is ridiculously small. so when i was trying to fit everything in, taking half out, cutting in frozen butter by hand ... i thought, this had better be worth it. and it absolutely was. hopefully, though, i'll have a bigger better food processor before i want to make pie again. but i will use this recipe every time. thanks!

Best Ever Sausage with Peppers, Onions, and Beer!

Reviewed: Jun. 26, 2006
make sure you really do use a big big skillet or pan. i didn't have room for the other onion! didn't matter though, my husband loved it. next time i'll use a better beer, though, for extra kick.

Sandy's Chocolate Cake

Reviewed: Mar. 6, 2008
i really do try to reserve 5 stars for recipes that absolutely blow me away, but this was very good. i think the cook time was actually a bit much, but that could absolutely just be my oven. the cake was light but moist, and not so rich that you couldn't enjoy a good piece. my husband (long reputed to be the pickiest man on the planet, and not someone who likes sweets) claims this is the best chocolate cake he ever had. i'm the chocoholic, and while i wouldn't go that far, i did enjoy it. for the record, i used a different frosting. thanks sandy! ****UPDATE: i made this again, with the frosting as listed. i'm not sure what i might have done differently the first time, but i followed the recipe exactly and the cook time was right on ... had my best friend over and we all agreed this is the best chocolate cake we have ever had. i will always make this when we get a hankering! 5 stars!

Sean's Falafel and Cucumber Sauce

Reviewed: Jun. 25, 2006
i baked these after rolling them into balls. they were still a little soft, but the taste totally reminded me of summer camp, when every year the israeli scouts would come for a week and make falafel. this is a great recipe (but i did use another tzatziki recipe!). thanks!

quick and easy and light. i thought it made about 3 servings. i didn't use the lemon extract and i thought it was lemon-y enough.
