Indian Stir-Fried Shrimp in Cream Sauce (Bhagari Jhinga)

Reviewed: Jun. 6, 2006
this is great stuff. i used some cayenne pepper instead of ground red pepper(i like spice). but the spices and the "fire" of the dish mix so well with the creamy taste of the coconut and really compliment the shrimp. i think serrano peppers would also be great. thanks for the fantastic recipe!

Scrumptious Strawberry Shortcake

Reviewed: Jun. 5, 2006
this is great shortcake; make sure you know what kind of shortcake you want. this seems very authentic to me, and i love to attend the strawberry festivals in texas and eat strawberry shortcake. the cakes are not too sweet, which is what you want since the berries will be! make sure you make the cakes at least a half-inch thick before baking so you can have reasonably thick cakes to cut in half (unless you like it thinner). i also did not use cream of tartar, although i may add a tad of vanilla or almond next time for variety. this would work with any other kind of berry -- thanks for the great recipe!

Portobello Sandwiches

Reviewed: Jun. 3, 2006
heaven. i added a little lemon juice to the mayo/caper mix, and some feta cheese to the warmed buns before topping off with the mushroom. if i could eat this daily i would. maybe i will. thanks for the quick and delicious recipe!

Maryland Crab Cakes I

Reviewed: Jun. 1, 2006
i have read other reviews and i understand that apparently, crab cakes from maryland are supposed to fall apart. i'm from texas, where we think of a crab cake as sticking together. so, if you're looking for a "traditional" maryland crab cake, this may be it. if you want something that makes an actual "cake", this isn't it. i added probably 1 cup of bread crumbs to keep the crab mix together; even then i had to smush the "cakes" like i was trying to make diamonds from coal a la superman. as per other suggestions, i added less old bay, and thank goodness. the flavor was okay but not amazing. sorry, but i'll keep looking.

Banana Spring Rolls

Reviewed: May 31, 2006
i feel bad rating this 4 instead of 5, because i really enjoyed them and thought this was a quick, unusual dessert. but there is a lot of room for personalization and "improvement". other fruit might be added with the bananas, as might some spices (i think i'll try some cinnamon and/or nutmeg with the bananas, or some allspice with some other fruits). also, mind your manner of wrapping and be sure you seal the rolls so that the oil doesn't saturate the fruit. a great recipe i'm sure i'll make again.

Peanut Butter Noodles

Reviewed: May 30, 2006
i used spaghetti noodles, and added cayenne pepper. also i used ground ginger instead of fresh. after reading others reviews (while making this dish!) i went to taste it and see if it needed more honey or broth, or if it was too "peanuty". i thought it was heavenly. i'll throw in chicken or tofu next time (i served it to my son with chicken strips and ate it plain myself -- i'm a veggie but none of my boys are). yummy yummy, thanks for the recipe!

Strawberry and Feta Salad

Reviewed: May 30, 2006
i thought the berries and cheese worked very well together. do make the dressing seperately so that everyone can add their preference. it was a hit with my friends at a recent party. thanks!

California Grilled Veggie Sandwich

Reviewed: May 27, 2006
these are good, but i just can't rate them 5 stars. good, but they didn't blow my mind. several recommendations: double the spread, as others have noted. i love feta, but other cheese choices might go over better. when you grill the veggies, slice thin! next time, i might follow another suggestion listed here, and use thinner bread slices and assemble the sandwich, wrap it up, put it on the grill, and put a brick on top. my guests just ate the veggie and bread/feta seperately. still good though! i'll never stop grilling veggies after this.

my husband says they'd be perfect if only they were a bit thinner and crisper. i'm rating it 5 anyway because he says they taste wonderful (and he's wierd anyway).

Mom's Carne Guisada

Reviewed: May 18, 2006
as other have said, this is great traditional carne guisada . if you like it spicy, add some serrano or jalepeno peppers; next time i'll throw it all in the crock pot since simmering for 20 minutes just won't do the trick.

Seafood Enchiladas

these are easy to prepare, but are lacking some spice. they're awfully creamy; next time i might throw together some tomatillo sauce or add some jalepenos for flavor.
