Crispy Corn and Rice Treats

Reviewed: Jul. 21, 2006
in high school, my best friend's mother would make this for us, and she also called it puppy chow. it was delicious then, and fun to make. this came out only half coated and clumpy. i'm not sure the chocolate/peanut butter mix is enough for a whole box of cereal, first of all. also, you have to coat the cereal completely before adding the sugar, and there didn't seem to be any way of accomplishing that with this amount. we'll still eat it, but it sure isn't the same. i think i'll just ask my best friend's mom. thanks anyway.

Vegetable Lo Mein

Reviewed: Jul. 15, 2006
this was okay, but i won't go farther than that. i also left out the honey - can't imagine this with it. i'd suggest some different or additional veggies, too, like snow peas and baby corn and bok choy. i probably won't make this again, and will go in search of another lo mein recipe. thanks anyway!

General Tsao's Chicken

Reviewed: Jul. 15, 2006
this was a lot of fun to make, and being vegetarian, i could only taste the sauce (i made it for my husband). i thought, though it was really good, something was just a little off, but at this point i'm not sure what. my husabnd wouldn't eat any, in the end, because he said it had "too much sauce". i'm going to take the leftovers to my parents, where i can get a better review. i'll probably do this again.

Amish Macaroni Salad

Reviewed: Jul. 11, 2006
of course, i agree with the sugar thing. also, i hate miracle whip and used mayo. this is a good bouncing board recipe, and let's you add or subtract to your own liking. i used too many noodles, since others complained of too much sauce, so next time i'll use a lot less. i also omitted the celery seed, added chopped green onion for regular onion, added garlic powder and shredded carrot. i'm sure i'll do this again. thanks!

Mexican Bean Burgers

Reviewed: Jul. 11, 2006
i also used shredded carrots, and followed another reviewer's advice ad sauteed them with the onion, pepper, some garlic, cumin, and chili powder. then i mixed that in with the beans, salsa, etc. had to use more bread crumbs/flour than recommended, but the burgers came out very tasty. a quick dinner, and really easy.

Roquefort Pear Salad

Reviewed: Jul. 5, 2006
the combo of pear and nuts and cheese is nice, but the dressing left much to be desired in comparison to other salads i've made from this site. also, i'd add more avocado. my family really enjoyed it, so i'm giving it 4 stars, but i won't make it again.

Spicy Black Bean Potato Salad

Reviewed: Jul. 5, 2006
this was good, but i wasn't blown away. a nice change from ordinary salad; i'll probably do it again. i was afraid there might be too much mayo, and cut it down, but i was wrong and i'll definetly use the full amount next time.

Basil Shrimp

Reviewed: Jun. 30, 2006
simple and flavorful. i got compliments all around. hint: don't leave the shrimp in the fridge for longer than an hour. also, i used dijon mustard instead of plain brown.

Brown Sugar-Rum Pound Cakes

Reviewed: Jun. 30, 2006
this just wasn't nearly as good as the more "traditional" pound cake i've made. it was too light to feel like pound cake, and too brown sugary to taste like it. also, the "glaze", once cooled, wound up like candy-caramel topping, so hard and sticky that i had to cut off the top of the cake so people could eat it. the 9 year olds in my family never turn down cake. if you try this recipe, DONT ADD THE GLAZE. as for me, i won't make it again.

Texas New Potato Salad with Grilled Red Onions

Reviewed: Jun. 30, 2006
this is original and makes a great change of pace from "creamy" potato salad. of course, i live in houston, and have never had much intertest in cafe annie since they're rumored to have been on the decline recently. but i got lots of compliments from family at yesterday's bar-b-q. 4 stars because you really have to serve this fresh and warm; i had mine in the fridge for 8 hours or so and it really lacked the kick it had when i first made it.

Best Ever Sausage with Peppers, Onions, and Beer!

Reviewed: Jun. 26, 2006
make sure you really do use a big big skillet or pan. i didn't have room for the other onion! didn't matter though, my husband loved it. next time i'll use a better beer, though, for extra kick.

Pineapple, Lime, and Ginger Soup

Reviewed: Jun. 26, 2006
oooooo a challenge. so here's what i did. i put the pepper, pineapple, ginger, cilantro, and lime in the blender. i used coconut milk instead of water and pureed it all. then i warmed the oil in a pot and added the soup; then added two teaspoons roasted red pepper chili paste and two tablespoons peanut butter, and heated until melted. i actually am sick, and had been looking forward to trying this recipe. i'm giving four stars because of all the modifications, but i know i'll make this again. this time i threw in some crab, but next time i'll probably add some tofu. i really agree with all the other reviews -- give this a try and modify to taste. it's worth it!

Sean's Falafel and Cucumber Sauce

Reviewed: Jun. 25, 2006
i baked these after rolling them into balls. they were still a little soft, but the taste totally reminded me of summer camp, when every year the israeli scouts would come for a week and make falafel. this is a great recipe (but i did use another tzatziki recipe!). thanks!

Tzatziki Sauce

Reviewed: Jun. 24, 2006
i was so torn over how many stars to give this and i finally settled on 4 -- here's why: had i not read the reviews, i might have ended up with a really liquidy mess. i strained the yogurt and salted the cucumbers for about half an hour - i was admittedly in a hurry, and i'm sure it would have been even thicker if i had left the yogurt to drain even longer. i also added some mayo (also per another review)and mint, and used juice from the whole lemon, and added a bit more dill -- put all in the blender and processed. in the end, the dip was thick enough for veggies or chips or pita or anything else. tastes great, both cool and spicy. with modification, this is a great side (plus, with fat free yogurt and mayo, it's almost guilt free).

Slow Cooker Chicken Stew

Reviewed: Jun. 24, 2006
i personally thought this smelled wonderful, and i did take a very small taste of the broth as it cooked, and thought it was awesome. my son ate up the chicken, and my husband said it was good, but never wanted seconds or leftovers, hence the 4 stars. i used chicken gravy, and more of it, and cream of chicken soup instead of celery. i also added carrots and celery and an extra potato. my hubby did say he thought it needed more salt ...
