A Drama Queen's Pavlova

Reviewed: Feb. 3, 2006
I had 3 egg whites to use up so I decided to make this recipe (cut in half). It was not what I expected. The beaten eggwhites just fit into one pan so if you make a whole recipe you're going to need 2 pans. Also, it stuck to the pan and I had to break it out (perhaps this was my fault because I greased the pan when it didn't say to do that). And finally, the coconut was just "wrong".

Coconut Meringue Cake

Reviewed: Apr. 12, 2006
The cake was great. We had company coming over one evening so I made it in the afternoon. There were only 3 pieces (from 16) left when the evening was over - so 5 people ate 13 pieces of this cake. One of my guest even asked if I would make the cake again and bring it to her daughters baby shower. It was a big hit.

Golden Cheddar Muffins

Reviewed: Jan. 24, 2010
I used half and half all purpose and whole wheat flours. I didn't have any buttermilk so I used milk with a bit of vinegar to sour it. I also chopped up some left over bacon and added that. The muffins came out very well, tender and delicious. They would probably have been even better with buttermilk. I will definitely make these muffins again - with or without the buttermilk!

Oatmeal Chocolate Coconut Chewy

Reviewed: Mar. 1, 2012
I made these today and they came out awesome! I only had 2 1/2 cups of oatmeal, no coconut and no vanilla (substituted rum flavor). My husband kept on sneaking them and saying "oh yeah, these are keepers" so they passed his taste test - and that's saying something since he's not much of a cookie eater. This is the first time I can remember (in 15 years together) that he's stolen cookies as I made them.

Upside-Down Coffee Cake

Reviewed: Apr. 28, 2011
This cake is huge! Use a very large pan. A 9 x 13 or even larger if you have it will do the trick or a 12" spring form pan. I started the layers in an 9" square pan but had enough cake batter left over to bake another cake so I just added some frozen berries and a strussel topping and made a second cake with the left over batter. The cake rises up a lot and the sauce will run over if you don't have a deep enough pan. I learned this the hard way and ended up having to clean my oven. The cake is tasty but the taste of the peaches I used was lost somehow. I was disappointed that the flavour of the fruit was lost so probably won't make this again as an upside down cake although I might use the batter part to make two "coffee" cakes with fruit in the batter and a strussel topping.

After-Christmas Turkey Potpie

Reviewed: Dec. 27, 2008
I forgot to add the thyme and used a "white" sauce made with chicken stock instead of the soup (didn't have it) and this was still delicious. Definitely a keeper.

Almond Rhubarb Coffee Cake

Reviewed: Jun. 22, 2007
You didn't say how much sugar or butter or almonds for the topping so I took a guess. Other than the missing ingredients in the list, the cake was very good. 5 Stars for flavour and 3 stars for the recipe composition.

Hungarian Mushroom Soup

This soup was excellent but you better make a double batch because everyone wanted seconds. Perfect just the way it is!

Grandma's Yorkshire Pudding

Reviewed: Dec. 21, 2008
This was my first attempt at Yorkshire Puddings. My DH loved them. Leftovers were great the next morning warmed and topped with strawberry jam. This one is going in my "keepers" recipe box.

Sensational Strawberry Shortcake

Reviewed: Jul. 4, 2008
I am giving this recipe 4 stars because everyone else at my house liked it but, honestly, I thought it was only worth about 1 star. Perhaps 40 minutes is too long to cook the "cake" but it was dry and hard. The egg white on the top of the cake stops the moisture from the cream and strawberries from merging with the cake so if you like a dry shortcake this is good - I like the juice from the strawberries to go into the cake so this is not the cake for me.

Best Ever Muffins

Reviewed: Jul. 10, 2014
Other than the cooking time, these muffins are AWESOME! I know my oven is hotter than most so I reduced the heat to 375 instead of 400 and checked them after 12 minutes. In 15 minutes they were totally done. 25 minutes and they would have been dried up prunes in my oven. Now, having said that, the muffins were GREAT. I added cranberries and the zest and juice of one lemon (added the milk to the lemon juice to make one cup - which curdled the milk and made like a buttermilk). This will be my "go to" muffin recipe for adding fruit and candies from now on.

Grandmother's Famous Cranberry Bread

Reviewed: Jul. 5, 2014
I made these during a hurricane and wasn't sure the power would stay on for the full hour to bake a loaf so I used muffin cups and it made absolutely fantastic muffins!

Nana's Apple Crisp

Reviewed: Apr. 21, 2014
There seems to be way to much flour in this recipe. CONS: The topping stayed like the sugary mixture I put on the top instead of baking together into a nice "crisp" mixture of sweet oatmeal. The apples had no juice at all - again, probably because of the amount of flour. PROS: The cinnamon flavor was nice and overall, if there had been a little less flour I think this would have been very nice. I may try it again and only use 1/2 cup of flour and maybe a little less sugar too (that's a personal taste thing).

Bread Machine Pizza Dough

Reviewed: Jan. 19, 2014
I have tried a few different versions of pizza dough for the bread machine but this one tops them all. We used a micro-brewery beer called Crafty Jack which is a nice dark ale and the crust was as delicious as the toppings! The dough was easy to work with. This is most definitely a keeper and my "go to" pizza dough recipe from now on! Thank you for sharing it!

Slow Cooker Adobo Chicken

Reviewed: Oct. 5, 2013
We didn't care for this recipe at all. I added some ginger as suggested by another reviewer and a couple Thai chili peppers for a extra little heat but it was still very blah. I will not make this again.

Honey Sourdough

Reviewed: Mar. 13, 2013
I made this bread using a "young" sourdough starter that I'm trying to nurture. I used all white flour (all purpose) and only 3/4 tsp of yeast as I wanted to see how my sourdough made out with a little less yeast. I then threw it all into the bread machine on the Whole Wheat setting and went to work. This bread came out awesome! I will definitely make it again and will continue to see how much yeast I can eliminate and have my sourdough starter do the work.

Poor Man's Pecan Pie

Reviewed: Feb. 8, 2013
This pie is so good! I followed the recipe exactly. Added a bit more cooking time until the pie seemed like set jello in the middle when shaken lightly. It came out perfectly!! A great pie when you have little in the cupboard but want a nice treat or to serve to guest (on the cheap)!
