Orange Chicken Stir Fry

Reviewed: Jan. 21, 2013
This will make a good base, but as it stands it's kind of meh. I didn't have an orange, so I left out the orange zest, but otherwise made the sauce as stated. For my taste, the result was too sweet and lacking some zing. Next time, I'll probably cut the brown sugar in half, use less orange juice, and add some red pepper flakes, maybe ginger too.

Apple Kuchen

Reviewed: Oct. 15, 2012
I made this from my (German) grandmother's recipe, which is almost identical. She used 1/2 cup margarine and no coconut (although I think that'd be a good addition). Also, the apples were thinly sliced, and it only cooks for 25 mins instead of 35. So easy and super delicious! It is very sweet though, a small square is enough for me. Make it for a party or large group of people!

Apple Strudel Muffins

Reviewed: Oct. 9, 2012
I took some of the other reviewer's advice, and the result was perfect. I used ~2 cups apples, one cup shredded and one diced. I used 1/2cup white sugar and 1/2cup brown, added the brown sugar to the apples to bring out more juice and creamed the butter with the white sugar. Also I added 1 tsp cinnamon and 1/2 tsp nutmeg to the dry ingredients before mixing. The crumb topping I didn't change. The batter was thick, but the muffins turned out moist and delicious. The cooking time was spot on too, at 20 mins they had a nice little crumb on my tester toothpick. Almost more like a cupcake than a muffin, but a big hit at the brunch I brought them to.

Baked Soy Lemon Chops

Reviewed: Sep. 19, 2012
Delicious! Best served with a little bit of sauce drizzled over it - but not too much, because the sauce is salty even with low-sodium soy sauce. But they are so easy and yummy!

Apple Crumb Pie

Reviewed: Sep. 18, 2012
I was comparing this recipe and another as I made my pie, so my review here is mostly for the filling. It's very good, but too sweet for my taste. Next time I'll cut the sugar to 1/2 cup (which is what the other recipe used). I did like that the topping used brown sugar; I used the 1/2 cup packed brown sugar with 3/4 cup flour and 5 tablespoons butter, plus a few sprinkles of nutmeg, allspice, and ground cloves as another reviewer recommended. I had slightly more topping than I needed, and it was delicious!

Missy's Candied Walnut Gorgonzola Salad

Reviewed: Sep. 18, 2012
Delicious! My first time making candied nuts, next time I'll start melting the sugar and then toss the nuts in, instead of adding them at the same time. I had problems with clumps of sugar sticking to the nuts and not melting. And this salad doesn't keep well, so you should put it all together within an hour of serving and be prepared to toss it after a few hours out.

Basil-Garlic Grilled Pork Chops

Reviewed: Sep. 5, 2012
I found this to be very bland, and the basil didn't really fit.

Mexican Brownies

Reviewed: Aug. 30, 2012
Very moist and cake-like brownies. I used regular cinnamon and cayenne pepper, and I would probably reduce the cayenne a little bit next time as it came through a little too strongly. And it wasn't sweet enough for me, so I topped it with the Chocolate Glaze I from this site and chopped walnuts. My coworkers seemed to enjoy them!

Chocolate Glaze I

Reviewed: Aug. 30, 2012
Simple and perfect! I used this to top the Mexican Brownies recipe from this site, which wasn't quite sweet enough for my taste, and this was just the right amount of glaze. It tasted great and set up nicely on top of the brownies.

Carrot Muffins

Reviewed: Aug. 26, 2012
It's not a bad muffin, but the flavor is kind of lacking. I used walnuts and put raisins in half the muffins; my boyfriend enjoyed the ones with raisins. I'm surprised there wasn't more flavor because the batter smelled delicious!

Pineapple Pork Chops

Reviewed: Jun. 2, 2012
The pork chops were pretty bland. I seasoned them with salt, pepper, and a little ginger before browning in butter. For the rest I followed the recipe exactly. The sauce was delicious! But it didn't thicken up much, so it just ran off the pork chops and I couldn't get the flavor to "stick". And the sauce was really the only flavor to these pork chops.

Big Soft Ginger Cookies

Reviewed: May 23, 2012
Love these! Great gingerbread taste. As other reviewers have recommended, I substitute orange juice or orange liquer for the water, and letting the mix sit in the fridge before rolling helps with the stickiness. And I put the sugar into mug so I can plop in the dough ball, roll it around, and pick it up easily. I used these in place of gingersnaps in another recipe on this site, Grilled Peaches with Gingersnaps (and ice cream!), perfect.

Mom's Buttermilk Cookies

Reviewed: May 18, 2012
Pretty good. I had some buttermilk to use up... the cookie is cake-like, without much flavor by itself, but good texture. Since it's cakelike, it starts to get soggy if you leave it in an airtight container; best to store it uncovered. The frosting was too sweet for me, next time I'll use less powdered sugar.

White Chocolate Macadamia Nut Cookies IV

Reviewed: Apr. 8, 2012
Not a great cookie IMO. I followed the reviewers who cut the chocolate and nuts in half. I would say that gives about the right amount of nuts, but not nearly enough chocolate. So if I did this again, I'd use 8oz chocolate, 4 oz nuts. But next time I'll try a recipe with brown sugar and almond extract; this cookies just tasted like butter to me, no other flavor.

Lemon Horseradish New Potatoes

Reviewed: Apr. 4, 2012
Easy to prepare, but I wasn't too impressed with the sauce. The lemon flavor dominated, with some spice from the horseradish.

Prosciutto-Wrapped Scallops

Reviewed: Mar. 18, 2012
This was ok; we made as directed but cooked on the grill instead of in the oven. The flavors of tomato and basil came through strongly, but didn't really work with the prosciutto. And if I'm going to buy scallops, I'd prefer a recipe that really lets the scallop flavor shine instead of masking it with other things. So I won't make this again.

Pollo Fajitas

Reviewed: Mar. 13, 2012
I wasn't sure about the ingredients, but this was actually quite good. I was missing some flavor, but I think that's mostly because I should have let it marinate longer than 30 minutes, and I forgot the lemon juice at the end. I'll try those next time, and that may tip it from pretty good to great. I used 1 lb chicken and removed from skillet to cook the veggies (1 red+1 green pepper + 1 onion), and tossed the chicken back in at the end - the amount of sauce was perfect.

Garlic Asparagus with Lime

Reviewed: Mar. 4, 2012
Pretty good. I didn't have shallot or onion, and I just tossed the garlic and asparagus into the butter/olive oil mixture at the same time. My garlic got a little burned before the asparagus was done. I added dried minced onion near the end, finished with the salt/pepper and lime juice, and topped with toasted cashews. I like the pan-fried asparagus taste, so some version of this will definitely go into my regular rotation.

Pumpkin Waffles with Apple Cider Syrup

Reviewed: Mar. 4, 2012
Tasty and unique! The apple cider syrup was amazing, although I might cut the sugar next time as it was too sweet for my taste. And it thickened so quickly! I was less impressed by the waffles; the pumpkin flavor didn't really come through. Mine were a little dense (probably I didn't whip the egg whites enough) and didn't crisp up even though I left them in longer than normal.

Pumpkin Bean Soup

Reviewed: Feb. 4, 2012
This is really yummy! I followed the recipe exactly, using sour cream as the garnish, and I found the spices just right. I definitely recommend adding the sour cream, it's the perfect extra flavor.
