Jalapeno Margaritas

Reviewed: Sep. 15, 2013
Not bad! Next time I'd muddle the jalapeno a bit to get more of the spicy flavor. Also I didn't have agave nectar, so I subbed Rose's sweetened lime juice; but I think it'd be better with the agave nectar+lime juice. It's definitely a strong margarita!

The Best Lemon Bars

Reviewed: Aug. 25, 2013
LOVE these lemon bars. I've made them twice now. The combination of gooey lemon filling and sweet hard crust is perfect. I do add some freshly grated nutmeg to the crust mix. For a half-recipe, I use the juice from 2 small-ish lemons and the zest from one (I love lemon!)

Refreshing Watermelon Salad from ATHENOS

Reviewed: Aug. 25, 2013
This is a really unique and tasty simple salad. I used straight balsamic vinegar since I didn't have a vinaigrette dressing, and it was good, not overpowering at all. It was pretty popular at our BBQ.

Lemon Bread

Reviewed: Jun. 29, 2013
This was pretty good. I used the zest from 2 small lemons in the bread, and used the juice of about 1.5 small lemons for the glaze (I tasted the glaze while adding the juice to decide when to stop). I also left out the nuts and added poppyseeds instead, which was delicious. It's a very thick batter, and it goes from "not done" to "over-done" very quickly, so watch it! For my oven it took about 45 mins and it was already starting to dry out a bit. But the glaze really gave it back that moisture.

Amazing Whole Wheat Pizza Crust

Reviewed: Jun. 23, 2013
Meh. Tasted like a whole wheat crust to me, and it was hard all the way through, definitely not soft and chewy on the inside. Probably won't try this one again.

Cranberry and Cilantro Quinoa Salad

Reviewed: Jun. 23, 2013
I just didn't care for the flavors here. I cooked the quinoa in chicken broth not water, and I didn't have fresh cilantro so I sprinkled in some dried. Other than that I followed the recipe. But all I tasted was the curry powder, it was overpowering and one-dimensional. I ended up throwing it away.

Beer Margaritas

Reviewed: Jun. 13, 2013
Amazing! I followed the recipe exactly. Everyone at our BBQ was intrigued by the name and wanted to try them, and everyone agreed that was a pretty darn good margarita - especially when it only had four ingredients!

White Chip Orange Cookies

Reviewed: Apr. 20, 2013
Delicious. I did make a few changes - added 1/2 tsp vanilla, added about 1/2 cup chopped macadamia nuts and reduced white choc chips to 1.5 cups. They're like a white choc macadamia nut cookie... but with a little hint of orange that makes them outstanding. I might make these instead of my usual white choc macadamia nut cookie from now on! I used the zest from one medium-size orange, didn't measure it out exactly.

Slow Cooker Cilantro Lime Chicken

Reviewed: Apr. 14, 2013
I love this recipe! It's so easy and tasty, my two favorites :) I have a tiny crock pot, so I just use one chicken breast and eyeball the ingredients. It cooks perfectly in 4 hrs. I've tried different salsas, and in the future I'll probably play with the seasonings too. I use the shredded meat for chicken tacos/burritos; it's delicious, tender and juicy.

Chef John's Asparagus Souffle

Reviewed: Apr. 7, 2013
Not sure what happened, we've made souffles before. But this one fell drastically, and the texture wasn't right - kind of mushy. We tried baking one longer but that didn't firm it up. The flavor wasn't good either - very bland, should have added salt and more garlic. The egg and asparagus didn't complement each other at all. Won't try this again.

Mrs. Sigg's Snickerdoodles

Reviewed: Mar. 17, 2013
Love these cookies, perfect snickerdoodle flavor, crispy outside and chewy inside. Easy and always delicious, I don't have to change a thing! EDIT Mar 2014: well, I had my first failure with these cookies, and I think it was because I used my brand new mixer to do the creaming. I must have over-creamed; the dough was horribly sticky, even after 15 mins refrigeration, and in the oven the cookies flattened out like crackers! So from now on, hand-mixing for me!

Spicy Lemon Pork Saute

Reviewed: Mar. 11, 2013
I followed the recipe except for cutting the cayenne pepper in half. The lemon was just too overpowering; at the end, while reducing the sauce, I added about half a tablespoon of sugar and a sprinkle of salt; that cut the acidity, but it just wasn't to my taste. At least the chops were pretty moist and tender!

French Breakfast Puffs

Reviewed: Mar. 10, 2013
These were delicious, like cinnamon-sugar donuts in muffin form! I did spice up the batter, I was worried it would be too bland - I added 1/4 tsp cinnamon and 1 tsp vanilla, and for the nutmeg I used freshly grated nutmeg and didn't measure how much I put in, but it was probably about 1/2 tsp. I also subbed butter for the shortening. It smelled delicious coming out of the oven; I baked for 25 mins, which gave a nice all-around crust but left the inside with a nice crumb. Then I dipped the top in butter but rolled the whole muffin in the cinnamon/sugar mix; it stuck all over the muffin even without the butter. The topping amounts given are way too much for 12 regular size muffins; I would cut them in half (3 Tbs melted butter, 1/4 cup sugar, and 1 tsp cinnamon). It was very sweet, like a donut; best for when you're having people over so you don't eat them all yourself!

Iced Pumpkin Cookies

Reviewed: Mar. 6, 2013
These are pretty good... I've tried them both with just 1 cup of pumpkin, and with the whole 15 oz can (~1.5 cups), and I definitely preferred it with the 1 cup. With the whole can, you need more spices to flavor the pumpkin, and the cookies come out almost too moist to hold the glaze. These cookies don't spread at all - the way they look when you put them on the pan is the way they'll come out of the oven! The dough is sticky right after mixing, so if you want nice flat cookies, give the dough time to rest before making the cookies. This amount of glaze worked well for me with some left over; I dunked the tops of the cookies in it instead of drizzling with a fork. And these definitely need frosting, they're not quite sweet enough to enjoy by themselves! Overall, a tasty cake-like cookie.

Garlic Green Beans

Reviewed: Feb. 24, 2013
These were really delicious. I only used 1 Tbs butter and about 1 Tbs olive oil. Next time I won't cook the garlic as long before putting in the green beans, the garlic got a little too brown. The melty Parmesan sent it over the top!

Delectable Marinated Chicken

Reviewed: Feb. 9, 2013
I thought this was good, and my boyfriend loved it - went back for seconds and thirds! I didn't have the sesame seeds, so I skipped that, and I didn't have garlic pepper so I used lemon pepper instead. In hindsight, I probably should have used garlic powder and regular pepper, but I wasn't thinking! Thanks for the great marinade.

Parmesan Asparagus

Reviewed: Jan. 21, 2013
This is pretty much the only way I eat asparagus now. Except instead of the oven, I just wash and trim the asparagus and put it in the steamer. When it's done I sprinkle and toss with olive oil, then add the garlic salt and parmesan. Yum!

Orange Chicken Stir Fry

Reviewed: Jan. 21, 2013
This will make a good base, but as it stands it's kind of meh. I didn't have an orange, so I left out the orange zest, but otherwise made the sauce as stated. For my taste, the result was too sweet and lacking some zing. Next time, I'll probably cut the brown sugar in half, use less orange juice, and add some red pepper flakes, maybe ginger too.

Apple Kuchen

Reviewed: Oct. 15, 2012
I made this from my (German) grandmother's recipe, which is almost identical. She used 1/2 cup margarine and no coconut (although I think that'd be a good addition). Also, the apples were thinly sliced, and it only cooks for 25 mins instead of 35. So easy and super delicious! It is very sweet though, a small square is enough for me. Make it for a party or large group of people!

Apple Strudel Muffins

Reviewed: Oct. 9, 2012
I took some of the other reviewer's advice, and the result was perfect. I used ~2 cups apples, one cup shredded and one diced. I used 1/2cup white sugar and 1/2cup brown, added the brown sugar to the apples to bring out more juice and creamed the butter with the white sugar. Also I added 1 tsp cinnamon and 1/2 tsp nutmeg to the dry ingredients before mixing. The crumb topping I didn't change. The batter was thick, but the muffins turned out moist and delicious. The cooking time was spot on too, at 20 mins they had a nice little crumb on my tester toothpick. Almost more like a cupcake than a muffin, but a big hit at the brunch I brought them to.
