Whole Wheat Beer Bread

Reviewed: Jan. 9, 2009
I made this recipe a long time ago with Bud light, and at the time I would have rated it a 3 1/2. This time, I tried using Guiness Stout (not extra stout), and it improved the taste of the bread dramatically! I used a bit more sugar than called for - a few more large lumps, and brushed the top with melted butter after baking. Everyone raved about it! My daughter thought this was even better than the bread a local Irish Pub-style restaurant is famous for.

Gorgonzola Bread

Reviewed: Dec. 6, 2008
I tried this recipe due to all the rave reviews. I made a bunch of appetizers for dinner as a trial run for our holiday party, and I'm glad I did. This recipe was very dissapointing.

Grandma's Lemon Pie

Reviewed: Jan. 1, 2008
I have been looking for a lemon pie recipe similar to the legendary one my husband's grandmother used to make; unfortunately, she had never written it down, and her secret is lost. This pie comes very close to hers. I used fresh lemon juice and added the zest as well (as Grandma had). I used 1/4 C. cornstarch, since many other recipes with equal liquid measurements called for it (I didn't want it to turn out rubbery). I decided to try another meringue recipe, since I already had a sore arm from the CONSTANT stirring involved in making the filling. This is very labor-intensive; I can see why making lemon pies has fallen out of vogue. The results are worth it, however; I made it for company, and they raved about how good it was.

Flank Steak Pinwheels

Reviewed: Aug. 27, 2007
My picky family loved this. I pounded the daylights out of the meat first with a marble rolling pin, and then marinated it for 48 hours. I also used tomato basil feta instead of plain. One thing I would do different next time, is to cut off the membrane covering the meat.

Whole Grain Healthy Banana Bread

Reviewed: Apr. 21, 2007
I was surprised how good this bread was. It is perfect for Phase II & III of the South Beach Diet. I used a whole egg and vanilla non-fat yogurt instead of the sour cream. Even without any added oil, this is very moist. This will be a well-used recipe in my kitchen.

Spinach Crumb Casserole

Reviewed: Apr. 17, 2007
My family usually does not like cooked spinach dishes, but I love them. I tried this, and everyone wanted second helpings. My husband said, "This is not bad for spinach", which is saying a lot. I will definitely make this again.

Simple Sticky Buns

Reviewed: Apr. 14, 2007
I tried this recipe for my teenage daughter's slumber party breakfast. It was a big hit. Six girls ate two pan-fulls! I used frozen roll dough instead of the bread dough, and omitted the nuts and raisins. I found that it was easier to put all the dough in the pan first, and since the brown sugar mixture was not liquid enough (more like a cookie dough), I crumbled it over the top of the rolls. I baked it for only 20 minutes, since we like them a bit "doughy". They were very good, and I'm sure this will be requested for future parties.

Pork Chops in Tomato Sauce

Reviewed: Apr. 11, 2007
Because of the 5 stars given by others, I tried this. It was very bland, even though I used more spices than specified.

Beef, Burgundy Style

Reviewed: Jan. 10, 2007
Okay, so I committed culinary blasphemy; I did not have the time to devote to all of the steps in this dish, so I used a crockpot instead. I whisked all the liquid ingredients together with the flour and poured it over the unbrowned meat and veggies. I also used dried herbs from the jar instead of the bouquet garni. I did omit the bacon fat, but added some chopped pre-cooked bacon. The dish turned out great - my greatest critics (teenage children) loved it. I will try the traditional cooking method next time just to see if it truly makes a difference.

Brazilian Black Bean Stew

Reviewed: Nov. 8, 2006
Due to the rave reviews, I tried this recipe. It was nasty. No flavor except for heat with a slight twinge of sweetness. Only the dog really liked it.

Irish Soda Bread

Reviewed: Apr. 14, 2006
I tried this for St. Patrick's day, and everyone loved it! The whole loaf was gone in less than 6 hours. The finished product looks like it came from a gourmet bread shop rather than homemade.Instead of raisins, I added dried cranberries. This has become a favorite recipe.
